Much better...although I question whether the top 10 safeties are even on this list...
Personally, I would put Goldson at about 8 - 10 and Whitner somewhere in the same range. Both are very solid but have some flaws. Goldson, by the way, knocked away 2 interceptions from Niner CBs in the NFC Championship game because he was so intent on catching the ball himself. To me, that speaks to his field awareness...not always elite. He had a terrific season overall but I agree with other posters that he is not yet elite and needs to improve certain aspects of his game before he gets the huge contract.
Cheers!

Personally, I would offer Goldson a 5 year deal worth 25-32 million (maybe 35). We offered 5 and 25 last year... would up it a bit but if he doesn't want it tag him this year and see if we can work on a deal before next offseason. If he wants 40-50 million than we see if Trenton Robinson or CJ Spillman are capable of handling the job otherwise we look at FS probably at the end of round 1. Much better S class this upcoming year. Either way to me Dashon would be crazy not to take it and be part of this defense. If he wants to be stubborn than we will replace him and move on... it's his loss but obviously we want him back.

Eric Weddle is a nice player, top 10 safety and got 5 years 40 million with 20 million guaranteed. I don't think its unreasonable for Goldson to feel he deserves to be in the ballpark of that based on performance in 2011.
Unfortunately I think the 49ers have too many good young player to lock up in the near future to invest that type of money in Goldson.

They offered him 5 years $25 million last year.... And he will make above $6 million this year. And above $6 million average on a long term deal very likely. And he's worth that. You don't have to pay him $7 - $8 million. But $6 plus he will likely get and he is worth that.
You know very well that 5 years 25M offer means very little. NFL contracts are inflated, and the real worth of the contract is realized after one knows the breakdown. Brooks contract is a perfect example.
Personally, I won't sign Goldson this season to a long-term contract. I'll wait a year, see if he can play at the pro-bowl level for two straight years. If he does that, I'd give him top 5 money.
Or you can only sign him to a contract that makes sense on actual performance and fits within the salary structure. Otherwise, the reps that Spillman is getting now may find him an adequate replacement. Spillman has a bit of the crazies in him and is a hitter but a bit faster than Goldson. If Goldson plays around too long, and Spillman shows he can handle the job, Dashon may be sitting on the couch when the season starts.
While I think that is an unlikely scenario, the reps Spillman is getting now with the 1st unit is only going to help him and the team whether or not Goldson re-signs.
Of course, but the problem is - it seems he (or his agent) are looking for a big deal. I'm completely against giving him a top 5 money. Gotta prove it for at least 2 years, especially when he has had poor seasons before.

I'll give him top 5 money on a deal structured like Brooks. Give him the opportunity to earn it, but I wouldn't hand him sh*t.

Goldson is one of the best at his position, but isn't worth top dollar. The 9ers made a fair offer. It could have been a little bit more, yall know Blaake is cheap. I just hope the guy signs ASAP, so we can continue greatness. He did come in late at the end of our last offseason and did very well (Pro Bowl), so it may not be so bad. Plus, it gives our backups more reps with the 1st team.

Ive come to believe certain players are "products" of our defense and products of playing behind people like Bowman/Aldon/Justin/Patrick. And i think dashon is one of them. Whitner was a nobody with the bills and he comes here and is now a bigger name. Anyone rememeber Aubrayo franklin? praised like a god, goes to the saints, franklin who ? And manny lawson? Lawson... who?

whitner wasn't a nobody with the bills. In fact he probably got less acclaim here than Buff. until his hit on pierre thomas
Lawson wasn't product of our defense because he was never good on our defense to begin with.
Franklin played well for NO, according to saints fans at least. I agree he was overrated when he was here but he still does some good things as a lineman.
It certainly doesn't hurt Dashon to have a great front 7 in front of him but dont discredit him completely. He flies around the field, is an aggressive player, makes big hits, can make the tough int. He is rangy and can cover a lot of ground quickly...my point is he aint chopped liver.
Football is a team sport. All 11 guys have to execute their job for a play to be successful and dashon executes at a high level

It seems to be the nature of the business. Eric Weddle & Eric Berry are the highest paid safeties in the league right now. That doesn't necessarily mean that they are the best safeties in the league. We just made Andy Lee the highest paid punter in the league, when I still believe Lechler is the best punter in the league.
Dashon is only 27 and is ready to enter his prime. He is in perfect position to make his one lifetime contract that will set him up for life. NFL is a cuthroat business; Last 3 years he has had 2 great and one good season for us. I think he is only going 2 get better. I'd like to see him as a 49er for a long time.
