Shaun Hill: Martz made me look bad

JT O'Sullivan won the QB job last summer because he had the best grasp of Martz's offensive system. Duh...everybody knows that.

Saying that, why did Hill play better with the same OC?

Because Martz obviously simplified his playbook for Hill midway through the season at Singletary's request.

Then wouldn't that insinuate that Martz's playbook was a little on the crazy side? The issue with Martz is, everything has to be his way or no way.

I agree with you. And wouldn't it also be smart to simply the playbook after not getting much reps in TC or Preseason with the first or second teams?? As far as I've known last years TC went like this in terms of the depth chart and splitting reps in TC:

JTO
Smith
Hill
Luke Getsy

I think that would be correct. I just remember hearing about Hill sitting out TC and not getting any reps an awful lot last year. But it was a "fair" QB competition

Funny how many people jumped on his bandwagon only to come crashing off of it when he couldn't hide his knack for turnovers.

That's why I'm in love with Sing. The guy is a straight shooter and if he says there is competition and both guys are on equal footing the players know it's legit.

My only concern with Sing and Raye is that they don't get all Mooch like late in the 4th quarter if we have the lead in close games. I want us to be a pound the ball and move the chains team but sometimes you can't just run 3 straight downs into consistent 3 and outs and give the other team a chance.

That game against Chicago where we gave up 15 points in like 2 minutes and lost in OT still haunts me. Perfect example of why you play to win....not to not lose.

He is huh. Then why name the QB now. Why not wait til AFTER the 3rd game. Which was what Sing STATED back when we learned there was going to BE a competition.

There was no competition. It was a figment of his imagination.

I'm still behind Sing but man it is NOT looking too good at the moment.

What the hell are you talking about? Sing never said when the decision would be made. The competition was very fair and they switched up every practice unlike last year when it was very obvious when JTO was HANDED the job and Nolan kept telling us not to read anything into the fact that JTO was getting every first string practice while Smith got 2nd and Hill hardly practiced.

Ummmm I believe that you should go back and look it up. It was the THIRD game and has ALWAYS been the THIRD game. Ummm now this said, how many games have been played? It's been reported on just about EVERY network that covers the NFL that it was the third game because the fourth game is traditionally used for the scrubs to make an impact on the coaching staff and for the other staffs of the league if they don't make it with the one they went through Camp with.

And fair? Mmmmm let's look at this. 2 snaps for passes in game one for Hill. 7 for Smith.

7 in game 2 for Hill and 9 for Smith. This is a QB battle not a RB battle. We already KNEW that we were going to Run the ball. Where was the QB battle again?

I got the stats from the 2nd article on Zone home page just to cite my source.

I didn't personally keep track of it but from everything I saw there was NO competition.

~Ceadder
Damn, why all the hate on Hill? If Martz really did do that to him, why cant he speak out on it? its not like he did it in the middle of the year last year and it was a distraction. Fuk, martz, we started playing much better when JT was benched

I remember this. Matt and Matt everyday would report that "again, JTO is working exclusively with the #1s as he has all week, with Smith and Hill getting little to no work, but Nolan says it's nothing to read into.."

A very weird offseason last one was. I have no doubt this year is going to be night and day compared to last year based on how the offense has been handled.

You all make it sound like Hill called a PC to rip Martz out of the blue. The rigged QB competiton (arm fatigue??) was a hot topic around here last year. Now after winning the job in a legit competition a reporter asked Hill about last year and he gave his straight-up opinion on the matter. What's the problem here?

IMO the way the competition went down last year is a big reason Martz is gone.

It's funny, I remember that most of you guys were on the JTO bandwagon. I called bulls**t right when I heard about Hill's "tired arm" and JTO getting all the preseason starts. I knew that he was fine, because you never hear about a quarterback's arm getting worn out like a pitcher. Nolan kept lying through his teeth and saying that he hadn't made a decision yet, but the competition was definitely not fair. Let me see if I can dig up a relevant thread to vindicate myself.

I think "the tired arm" case proves a lot. Why Nolan and Martz lied? Why Hill didn't get a real chance to win the job? My guess is that Martz had decided a long ago that Hill can't get the job done. And we all saw how Martz's boy JTO managed. It still makes me sick.

He did say that he would probably make a decision after the 3rd game. The reason Singletary and Co. made the decision now instead of after the Cowboy game is simply because Alex had to CLEARLY outplay Hill during the offseason.

He also said it was going to come down to playing against other teams that Alex would have to show that he could handle the live action and prove he was the superior QB. He did not do that with his play in the first 2 games or during Raider practices and one game (the 3rd game) probably was not going to sway anything, so Singletary decided to make the decision now, rather than later to get the offense more in sync with the starter before the season.

Imagine how pissed off you would be if you were completely healthy while your coach told the media that your arm was tired!? Hill couldn't just come out and say my coach is lying or he would've been cut. For him to release a little steam about it now seems more than fair.

I must defend myself and say I have never seen that message board in my life.
I can't speak for anyone else.

Because all the Smith sympathizers are bitter that Hill won the job and now they're looking for anything negative to say about Hill. Now he's not going to be good, his arm will fall off after week 4, he is not a leader

I just got finished reading an article talking up Hill's ability to point the finger in his OWN direction (Mayhew's latest) and now we have THIS?!?!

If there was ONE thing that I admired about Hill it was his ability to take the blame even when it wasn't his fault. To all his supporters, that showed leadership. I've been up in the air until NOW. Shaun Hill=Barrack Obama. Built up on ALOT of nothing and then rammed down my freakin throat.

Say what you want but mark my words he's NOT going to last long. Not if this article is true. Martz is GONE, what the truck does he have to do with the 49ers of the PRESENT. Good leaders recognize this fact and move on. Poor leaders blame others when it is convenient for them to do so.

I hope that he doesn't lose too many games for us.

~Ceadder

You'd be b***hing if you were treated like that too... Just look at how you reacted to this article. He WAS PROFESSIONAL and took the situation like a man because he could have blown things up in an instant last year. Imagine if he had opened his mouth just a little? Instead, he kept his cool and came to work and did his job.

I still admire him and am a fan. This changes nothing.

Exactly. Just because the dude speaks out his frustration, he is't a leader and suddenly won't win us any games....wtf? is this guy still pissed off about his boy Smith not getting the starting job?

MIKE SINGLETARY

On what he likes best when he looks at Shaun Hill:

"I like the consistency. I think he has a commanding presence about him when he gets in the huddle. I think the guys have learned to rally around him and his leadership. Alex Smith continues to do that. Alex Smith, as I said before, made great strides. I'm very excited about what he brings and what he's had to work through to get to this point. Shaun, right now, really offers a lot of leadership and I'm excited about that."

I think Singletary know a little something about leadership

lol.

Try talking to a Colts fan or Pats fan about this unusual idea. Niner fans use to understand this, but obviously it has been lost, and for obvious reasons.

Shaun Hill sucks. Alex Smith sucks. Their opinion on any coach in the NFL means ZERO to me.

Just like I don't give a rats ass what Charlie Frye thinks about how his career was handled, nor Andrew Walter, nor Joey Harrington, nor Byron Leftwich.....starting to see a pattern?

Now when a QB that has actually performed well in the NFL for a few seasons claims mishandling...ok now you have my ear.

Hill needs to shut the f**k up and just thank his lucky stars the Niners suck so bad he is actually an starter.
