Alex Smith all the way
Anyone who thinks that JT O'Sullivan didn't DESERVE to start last year is, plain and simple, an idiot.

JT was the best QB in the preseason, period. So what if he was only the best because he knew Martz's system. Who was our coordinator? Mike Martz. End of discussion. There is no arguing this.

Yeah i'd agree with this. Smith looked poor to mediocre but in the end, it didn't matter since he injured himself anyway.

Shaun Hill just looked lost.

To be fair, I don't believe they gave anyone any first team reps in preseason except for........JTO

Smith was not healthy, that was plain to see,Hill needed to learn the system,so JT starting was a given. The problem is after the Detroit game the guy was worse than Hill by a wide margin.Martz not seeing his guy was terrible, and Nolan not stepping in to correct things were the problem.I am glad both of those asshats are history. Now at least we have a coach that will pull a guy if he is sucking it up,a coach that will step in and let the OC know he is being a dumbass when he is throwing the ball in the fourth quarter with a lead against Philly and Frank Gore averaging 5.3 ypc in the backfeild.Martz is such an inflexible moron. Not to mention now we have a healthy Smith and Hill to choose from.We are in an infinitely better situation than this time a year ago, even with the unknowns we face going into training camp.

I like how my name is at the top of the list. John Hancock style. Damn this is an old thread though.

So the Webzone pretty much has like 1% of people who actually know what the flip they're talking about

Exactly, so the few realistic and objective niner fans who were calling for Smith's head on a silver platter long before now and certainly BEFORE he got injured and who were labeled as "haters" by the blindly loyal Smith supporters seem to have known what they were talking about. I love it!! Bunch of dip@#$% on this site. Now that Martz has spoken what do you have to say for yourselves?

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! GOOD ONE!! The idiots that picked JTO are as dumb as martz for picking him. What do we have to say for ourselves??? I am pretty sure we are not nearly as dumb as the people who thought JTO was the best choice. I am so glad we can go back and read this dumb retarted $hit people post.

JTO was the best choice at the time so Martz made the correct choice. His very good play early on (which everyone seems to conveniently forget about) proved it. Only after OL protection broke down did JTO go downhill.

I' d rather say when Defensive coordinators figured JTO out.
It took just 4 games...

Well, thanks for letting me know what you'd RATHER say but considering the fact that MS ripped into the OL for their horrendous protection of JTO last season (another fact that conveniently gets overlooked/ignored with all the JTO/Martz bashing around here), and Hill proceeded to flourish as the top-rated passer behind the improved protection that followed, I'd say it was the OL that was primarily responsible for JTO's downhill spiral.

Everyone knows that any qb who has to run for his life almost every play due to a porous OL is going to have big problems and that's exactly what we all witnessed
(those of us who actually watched the games).

What exactly is there to figure out -- JTO was/is a superior qb to Hill and Smith in every way and proved it during those 4 games. Fans around the country were pleasantly suprised if not shocked at how good he was and the resulting 7th-ranked offense that he directed. Therefore, I can understand why Martz correctly chose him.

It was the difference in the OL after those 4 games until MS lit a fire under them for Hill that was the deciding factor. I'm surprised that's not more obvious to fans here. I guess with all the Martz-hating and whining about the 7-step drops, they forgot that it all starts in the trenches with the OL. Silly rabbits.

Yea, JTO starting was a "given." So much so, that 95% of the people picked Smith or Hill to win .

JTO starting was the RIGHT choice. JTO being pulled was also the right choice, but that's irrelevant to this thread.

Exactly, this is nothing more than common sense fact but the Martz-haters are too biased to admit this basic truth. They're so busy whining about 7-step drops that they think they know better than a famed qb guru.

It was the weak OL that was primarily responsible for JTO's problems, not JTO. The OL had/has an infamous history of poor protection so it amazes me that more fans don't even remotely mention that as a contributing factor to JTO going downhill -- its all about how horrible JTO was and what a moron Martz is.

You don't go from efficient gunslinger to fumbling butterfingers for no reason. The OL protection went away as they played better DL's (as you mentioned) and JTO's performance suffered as a result since he was forced to run for his life almost every play. You did watch the games, right?

Unless one claims that JTO's first four games were a complete fluke or, like you, attempt to excuse them away, the deciding factor was clearly the OL play -- where it all begins for an offense, btw.

While all you Martz-haters like to cite the pulling of JTO for your support of MS, it was actually his ripping into the OL (also conveniently ignored but proves my point) b/c of their poor protection of JTO following that "pulling" that was his greatest contribution as Hill proceeded to become the top-rated passer behind the improved OL protection that followed. JTO would've performed far better had he had the kind of OL protection that Hill did the second half of the season. The two go hand in hand.

It wasn't the offensive line's fault when JTO threw 2 interceptions in the endzone @Saints

In Singletary's first game as HC JTO was 13/21 131 yds 0 TD 2 fumbles (1 lost) and 1 INT returned for a TD...... S.Hill then took over and was 15/23 173 yds 1 TD 0 INT

So according to you, Singletary went in at halftime pulled down his pants and willed the offensive line to make Shaun Hill play better.

JTO was a horrible quarterback who is now a backup on one of the worst teams in the league. Martz got fired for the 2nd consecutive year in a row by two losing teams. The offensive line was equally as bad with both QB's. JTO's last 5 QB ratings were horrible. There is no debate, no argument, JTO was horrible and so was his QB guru. Your posts are flat out pathetic.
