Why did we overpay so much for Brooks? And where does that leave us now?

I would like to keep Ginn, but if, and only if, he is signed as a return man. No use pretending that he has much value, if any, as a wide receiver.

But he has great value as a return man. And that's more valuable to our team than a team like the Saints who can score at will. We rely on our defense and special teams.

Having problems with your reading comprehension, today.

Read what I wrote again: "I would like to keep Ginn, but if, and only if, he is signed as a return man."

Let me try again. I think we should keep Ginn as our return specialist, but not as a wide receiver.

Where did I say I want him as a WR? Show me.

lol

maybe understand how contracts work and the cap before flying off the handle about giving a guy $3m in guaranteed money a season

1 the 9ers are around #10 in the league with the most cap to spend at around $20m
2 nfl contracts are not guaranteed
3 45 million was the total number with the last two years inflated and probably an option after year 4 so the last two years are basically b******t
4 3 million a year is the only number you need worry about
5 good signing not over paid
6 championship

The 11 sacks came his rookie season. He hasn't reached double digit sacks since. Maybe I'm missing something.

When did Brooks ever do 11 sacks? Ever? Above 10 ever? Double digits. Aldon Smith came in and did it as a rookie and made it look easy.

You are getting to hung up on the stats. You dont think Harbaugh, Vic and Baalke have looked at every single play involving Brooks 3 and 4 times over? There are a lot of things the stat line wont capture. Clearly what our FO saw on film (and everyday workouts) impressed them enough to offer him what they did. This isn't some FA that they've only watched film on or read about. He's been on the team for 3/4 years. They know him well. The bottom line is this signing wont stop us from signing the rest of the guys we value in FA. And if we can keep one of the most elite front 7s in history together for a few more years then its worth it.

I'm fine with keeping this front 7 together and think it's a good idea. I just hope we can sign the rest of the guys we also want.

You dont think Praag the mathmatical geek has the numbers all maped out? I highly doubt they are just doing one offs. As Baalke has said, they have a value assigned to each guy. I assume that means they know at one point one players contract would prevent them from signing anothers. If they gave Brooks 7 million a year (potentially) its because they felt they could still sign the players they want for the value they want them. It will work out. I bet we sign Goldson, Brooks, Morgan and Snyder to long term deals. I wouldn't be suprised or that upset if the rest walked. That would be a pretty kick ass offseason assuming we get a corner or maybe keep Spencer around?

I don't see Ted Ginn in there or Alex Smith. The young guys are not ready (QB's). Think about it. But for 2 fumbled punt returns ALEX SMITH would have had us in the Super Bowl. He really would have.

What about Vincent Jackson? How do we sign him now?

LOL....I dont know how I over looked Smith....duh.

I'm not sure if the question of VJ was a joke? I doubt a big name FA was ever in the plans. Not that everything Baalke says is gospel, but he did say FA is a marathon, not a sprint. He was implying that he's not going to get into bidding wars for the high priced/ over priced 1st tier FAs. Unless Jackson (D and V) ended up on the market weeks after March 13th, I dont see them in the plans.

P.S. Ginn may or not stay. I wont lose sleep either way.

Vincent Jackson is not a joke. He would help this team. And I would lose sleep for sure if we lost Ginn. Did you see our return game with Williams?

I guess I'm just under the belief that if the Niners really wanted a guy like VJ or DJ, they wouldn't make a move that would prohibit them from doing so. At the end of the day your assumption is that the Brooks signing blew up their plans. My assumption is the Brooks signing was already factored into the bigger picture. If they dont get a superstar WR it's not because of the Brooks signing, imo.

~ Alex Smith - ascending albeit not great. 2nd year players are much worse than him. Don't kid yourself.

~ Dashon Goldson - Turned down 5 years and $25 million last year before his monster year. Will be espensive this year.

~ Carlos Rogers - Would love to have him back. But huge money for a 31 year old CB doesn't make sense.

~ Adam Snyder - Have you seen Chilo play? Don't think this guy is important?.....

~ Ted Ginn - Have you seen Kyle Williams try to return kicks? Do you think going into 2012 with KW as your primary return man is a good idea?.....

With the massive overpayment to Brooks now multiple of these may not be able to be signed. I just don't know what the front office was thinking? The highest sacks he ever had was 7. The highest tackes he ever had was 49. You explain it to me?

IMO he's a product of the players around him. Justin Smith and Aldon Smith are beasts. And Ray McDonald is hugely underrated. Sopoaga is good. Willis is great. Bowman is good. He's in a phenemonal front 7. And the attention is put to other guys. I just don't think he is $44 million good. And it has future salary cap implications. I'm fine with keeping our players. But I don't think that means massively overpay. We could have made OLB a priority in the draft too and picked up Vincent Jackson or Bowe with the money. I just don't know about this deal. Glad to have him back? Yes. At this price? No way.

only in your opnion , i trust in our GM not in u !

because he's our most complete OLB by far and the best OLB in FA and or the draft, not to mention a 3 down player in the best front 7 in football. Over-reaction thread.

this
Dont worry SD once we overpay Alex the money given to Brooks wont look so bad

In your professional opinion, right?

C'mon SanDiego.
A better question would be why do people keep starting threads about us overpaying for Brooks despite knowing that only $17.5 mil is guaranteed?

who said it wasn't?

X2

Obviously this contract value was at or below Baalke's predetermined value for Brooks or it wouldn't have happened. That said we will still have more then $25M in cap room after this, leaving us plenty of room to deal with our remaining FAs and draft picks, should we need a FA WR(if morgan leaves) I dont think we will have an issue signing a replacement.

Yes, we understand that 7 sacks is "less than 10". You've stated he's only had 7 sacks EVER about 15 times already. Actually, you stating that so many times may actually be more than Brooks' career sacks! Can we get a comparison on that???

That still doesn't change that A - This was his first year as a full time starter. So he got 7 sacks in his first year starting EVER! B - Who was going to be better than him in this year's FA group? And C - We still don't know how the contract is laid out! So you don't know he's being overpaid, you don't know it will be a cap problem, you don't know anything abou it! Remember Nate Clements' contract at all?

Exactly. It's the guaranteed money that counts.
Why so angry SD9er? You act as if the sky is falling! No one knows the details yet, if I had to guess it will benefit us more in the cap then you are thinking. There is a history over the past few years in which we get contracts with players that are cap friendly. Overrated? I think not. Do you remember the days of NO PASS RUSH? You nor I can't put a price on how much Brooks (a 3-4 OLB) is worth on the open market. I think it is safe to say the 49ers didn't want the price to inflat and pulled the trigger.

This move only keeps the WHOLE LB core together (Smith, Willis, Bowman, and Brooks), nothing to important about that I guess. I'll say it just once, PASS RUSH produced the turnovers and QB hurries! Whether you think Brooks was a big part or not is not improve, he was part of it. PERIOD.

He is signed. Your anger will not change that fact. Plus its not yours or any fans money, its the teams. Let them spend as they see fit, they are the experts, we are not. Prepare to eat crow when the numbers finally come out.
