The San Francisco 49ers have ruled out four players for Monday night's matchup against the Washington Commanders, including defensive end Nick Bosa.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters after Saturday's practice, providing updates on several players ahead of the Week 6 matchup. Bosa had a chance to return after missing the last three games with a calf injury, but he will remain sidelined.
Bosa previously expressed optimism about his chances of playing this week.
"We would have been pleasantly surprised if he could go this [week]," Shanahan said. "So, I was pleasantly surprised that he was that optimistic last week, but we still would have been surprised. This was kind of what we were expecting.
"And there was a chance. He wasn't wrong when he said that, and I think he felt that way, but we were going to make sure it was fully good, and another week will help."
The 49ers opened the practice window for wide receiver Christian Kirk this week. When asked whether the team planned to activate him ahead of Monday night's game, Shanahan was noncommittal.
"Possibly," he responded.
Fullback Kyle Juszczyk is set to return after suffering a hyperextended knee and bone bruise in Week 4, injuries that forced him to miss last weekend's game against the Seattle Seahawks. Shanahan confirmed that Juszczyk is "full-go."
The coach also acknowledged that the fullback's quick recovery has been impressive.
"It looked bad at the beginning, and then they said they thought it would be three weeks," Shanahan said. "And Juice has always been fast every time he's ever been hurt, but this was real impressive."
Wide receiver Mike Evans has been playing through a rib injury. However, the veteran experienced another setback this week, developing Achilles soreness. Evans was listed as questionable for Monday night's game, and Shanahan said the 49ers should have a better idea of his status Monday.
Defensive end Mykel Williams was also listed as questionable. The second-year player returned to action last weekend after recovering from the ACL injury that cut short his rookie season.
Shanahan was asked why Williams was questionable after appearing to come through the game against the Seahawks without any issues.
"Yeah, but he still has things, and if someone has things, and they don't play in the game, and we don't put questionable down there, then we're in a lot of trouble," Shanahan explained. "So anybody we have any question about is questionable."
Running back Kaelon Black didn't practice Saturday, but his absence wasn't injury-related.
"He's having a baby right now," Shanahan revealed.
