What did he do to earn his spot on the bench? There is no way he's that bad. I think he would've been a great help when Brown went down against the Giants.
Yeah, I've been wondering that myself. I understand the 3 mil. thing and injuries. But they just threw him under the bench even when he was healthy. Spencer isn't that bad from what I've seen. This has to be a practice meltdown thing or something out of the public eye, its all I can think of. I mean, I trust the coaching staff and all. But I have been wondering what was it the made them just bury Spencer at the bottom of the CB depth chart when he was a starter at the beginning of the season. There has to more to it than just the production of Brock and Culliver.
I still think Spencer had a tendency to favor his injuries. He always got the veteran's courtesy, and Harbaugh's staff wasn't feeling it.
Then he most have a reputation in the locker room as a guy who malingers.
Wouldn't be the first NFL player to be that way.
...and that's exactly why I'm saying Harbaugh might not have been a fan of SS.
It was reported that after the hamstring injuries he had a nagging toe injury that lasted through most of the season. From the very first day, Fangio said if a player isnt healthy he doesnt feel comfortable playing him. Couple that with SS's history of malingering, by the time he may have been healthy enough to contribute it could of been too late and the coaches felt more comfortable with the players theyve seen all season.
This is pretty common when a new coaching staff comes in, whether its injuries or attitude, some players just arent given the chance because the coaches only have a short window to get comfortable with the guys that fit their scheme... once the season starts its all about gameplanning, not figuring out the depth chart. Rogers is a great example, he's always been a great corner but his attitude and the stigma of dropped interceptions led him to Shanahans doghouse. Coaching staffs can only play around with the depth chart for so long, once the season starts the coaches just move forward with who they are comfortable with, they cant "test out" a guy to see if he's 100% and fits the scheme in a real game situation if the score is still close.... and outside of tampa its not like this team had allot of 2nd halfs they could experiment with.
