Well, third down is considered the passing down and he's the QB...
Its not like he's had one or two bad years on third while under center. His whole career has been crap on third down. Why? I'm not sure. OLineman and WRs have come and gone, yet the third down deficiencies are still there. Id have to guess its because when its third down, which is considered a passing down, defenses drop coverage and bring the heat, forcing Smith to make a quick decision. This has been one of his criticisms in the past and present. Lets hope this will change this year.
In some cases yes... But very debatable because there are down and distance involved. And also what the offense is trying to do against the defense during the game. If you are thinking about the generic run, run, pass offense with a 3rd and long as a result than -- yeah the pressure is not only on Smith but the offensive line and the receivers to convert that. But the Harbaugh's offense or any good offense, can result in a 3rd and short or 3rd and 4-5. In that situation it might come down to what the OC like to do based on what the defense is giving them. The OC can go run or pass to get that 4-5 yards.
It's easy to make a simple statement and say that Smith is terrible on 3rd downs. In part it's true, but in reality it's more involved than just him.

just sayin
and if some says it's because what i reply on peoples post it is because that was what i received and it's what i see here.
no excuse...
