Lets cut or trade VD for not working with the team.

Vernon has set the standard... there is no comparison. When Crabs catches 13 touchdowns in a season, fans will be more than happy to give him a free pass.

Has any NFL reporter written a comparison of the Player Led Practices from various teams? The practices might lead to more commoraderie but the niners only have a few players showing up. All three QBs are showing up now but not all the receivers. Gore is still rehabbing, so don't expect him there.
The great players tend to put in more time, whether on their own or with a teammate. Crabtree isn't a bust, but it would be nice if he dropped some of the stuff that leads fans to believe he is a diva. Act like a diva, you are a diva. VD is far from perfect. He has grown into quite a player but still needs work on recognizing defenses, etc.
I wish they all could be in the film room with Harbaugh going over their mistakes from last year and understanding their positions. That will happen as soon as the lockout lifts...any news yet!!!

Gore is 100% healthy and working out according to Rosenhaus.

Rosenhaus is an agent. If Gore had both legs amputated he would still be selling him for his ten percent. Gore is still rehabbing but if he is with the team that would lend credibility to the practices.

Rosenhaus has nothing to sell or gain at this point by making false claims.

With all the debate about Crabtree, it seems weird to me that Vernon has not been around. I see his tweets from all over the world lately and it seems like he is enjoying the lockout as much as the NHL and NBA are going to if it stretches into next season.
While I know he has proven himself the last couple years, he is certainly not perfect, and it would be nice to see him get in better sync with Smith heading into next year.
Just like Crabtree he has all the physical tools to be a top tier player in this league but he is not going to get there without practice. At least all reports for Crabtree is he is working out in Dallas. Vernon just seems like he is on vacation.
Has there been news about him that I have not seen???
I'm not too worried about either of them not being there. Vernon gets a pass because he's really stepped up as one of the best Tight Ends in the league. People look the other way when things are going right. The problem is Vernon is physically capable of being the best TE in history, but I'm not sure if he has the desire to push himself that far. I know he's a dedicated guy, but I don't know if he'd go that "extra mile."
I don't fault Vernon or Crabtree for not being in San Jose with the other guys. They seem to be doing mostly conditioning drills and it's highly unlikely VD or Crabtree will come in out of shape anyway. As much as they need to work with Alex Smith, we don't know if any of our players really understand the playbook they're working with. If a coach was allowed to be there, then I'd definitely expect everyone there, but that's not the case.

What standard? If he is the best there is we are a long way from being great.
I think he is really good, and has all the tools to be at the absolute top, but he is not there yet, or anywhere close. Tony Gonzalez, Antonio Gates type of guys are a level above him if you ask me.
Jerry Rice was the absolute best there ever was and I can guarantee he would be catching passes. Davis is not a natural pass catcher and taking an extended vacation isn't going to help.
Same goes for Crabtree not being there, and I would say a lot more heat should be on him than Vernon, but I don't get why VD gets a free pass.
In the end it is a small thing as these might very well be a waste of time, but I would feel more confident knowing they were all working on their game together.

The standard being that VD realized a couple years ago that he didn't have all the tools to be the best, he was missing good hands. So he went out of his way to catch balls from the jugs machine 24/7 to get them to where they needed to be... and it paid off with 13 TD's... that standard.
It's easy to place Gonzolez and Gates ahead of him, but you're only looking at half the picture by focusing on catches. Take into account blocking and VD trumps those dudes. VD isn't a natural pass catcher, just like those guys aren't natural blockers. But all these guys took the time and greatly increased the area of their games they needed to, but their is a ceiling on how good you can get in any one area. VD will never be able to pull in some of the catches that Gonzolez and Gates do, but those guys will never be the as dominant a blocker as VD.
You look at complete overall TE's and VD is in the top 5, I personally would put him #2 behind Witten. When Crabs gets into a top 5 WR discussion he will get a pass from the fans, as of right now he's not even in the top 20.
