How long will JimmyG retain the 49ers starting job?

Jimmy G gets traded to Washington at some point before the trade deadline for a couple 2's or if he has a successful season, he goes to Washington for a 1st + more after winning Super Bowl LVI

You might wanna go ahead and get rid of that thought now. Not happening

..BUT....if he goes from his level of college competition to mastering Shanny's playbook and overcoming the speed of the NFL in training camp--he's a downright prodigy.

If he overtakes Jimmy and begins the season starting, that should be scary af for every team in the league.
Jimmy will be NFL MVP. This is the best thing that could happen to him. Jimmy was playing for a contract in 2017 and looked like Super Man. Once he got that contract he started banging porn stars and rested on his laurels.

This is the dumbest thread ever and deserves to be immediately locked. It's disgusting. Not Just That is rude and ridiculous to Jimmy G but also is exactly the attitude that will blow up Trey Lance from having any chance of success in the NFL after being drafted number 3 at 20 years old playing for North Dakota State University. This is the dumbest thread ever and if it's not locked in 5 post I will absolutely blow my stack and lose all respect for the web zone as a place of intelligent and interesting commentary relating to the San Francisco 49ers

This. Garoppolo's primary problem is that he has issues staying healthy, not that he can't perform. He has a good grasp of the offense, the respect of the locker room and all the incentive in the world to play out of his mind this season.

Too many people are acting like he's a scrub when the team wins with him far more often than not while losing large numbers of games with other QBs.

I agree with both of you. Often times these QB situations can be messy but in this case everyone's interests are really aligned. Jimmy, the 49ers and Lance and all benefit greatly by Jimmy playing well, which really just means Jimmy playing.

Sure... but if I had Bill Gates's money without the requisite silliness and creepiness and my dream woman on my arm than it would be a world of lollipops, poodles(okay not a poodle guy necessarily), sunshine, and daisies and lillies.

I'm not trying to make fun. That really would be something. But that would really be something.

When Russell Wilson kind of was a surprise as a 3rd round pick who became a starter unseating Matt Flynn, Wilson was an established, long term, highly successful and polished starting QB at two FBS, Power Five or BCS schools in NC State and Wisconsin.

Lance was a FCS one year starter who sat out his last year and needs to work on some things. Plus he has an established starter in his way versus a guy who flashed as a backup and the league thought might deserve to be a starter somewhere.

But yes, that would be something indeed if it happened.
I would probably give a better answer based on how good Lance looks in training camp and preseason. We'll have to see how raw he really is.

Right now, you can put me among the doubtful crowd as far as if he will start some games this year.

Don't think he'll start games unless he's forced into action because Jimmy injured himself again

I wouldn't hold my breath on that.

For me the best case scenario is that Garoppolo stays healthy all season, plays well enough to get the 49ers some decent draft compensation in a trade and Lance is your Week 1 starter in 2022 after having had a full year to study film, further refine his mechanics, gain some reps in training camp and various game situations and having a better understanding of the speed of NFL defenses versus those of the FCS.

Starting the rookie sensation early is rarely a good idea. Why rush? There will be a competition, of course, but it would be foolish to push out an experienced middle-tier veteran for a player who hasn't had the reps.

Jimmy has been in the league a while. He understands this is a business. He'll get paid next year, especially if the current trajectory holds and there aren't any top-tier QB prospects in the 2022 draft.

Barring injury, I don't see how anyone could justify making a switch at QB if the season is going well. "Looks like we're heading for the playoffs. Let's yank the QB and let the rookie play."
I hope Jimmy stays healthy all year and plays well. I'd love for Lance to sit all year and learn. And if Jimmy plays well, he would be worth more at the end of the year before moving on to Lance full time the following season.

Would be awesome if we go deep into the playoffs and Lance understands what that takes.

Probably within 2 games knowing Jimmy's Injury history.
2 years if he stays healthy.
One year unless the team s**ts the bed and Jimmy gets injured.
