Now that Minnesota drafted Kellen Mond, I see the 49ers packaging Trey Lance and Jimmy Garappolo for Kirk Cousins. Shanahan's plan along.
Bwahaha, surprised you didn't say for Steve Deberg. I vaguely remember watching Deberg play a little. I became a real Niner fan the year they started mixing Montana in. I was Trey Lance's age at that time.
I give Jimmy 12 months, either from injury or from Lance learning quickly.
In an interview I saw, Kyle was saying he would aggressively look to move Trey into the starting role during the season if he shows he can handle it. I hope they find ways to mix some Trey into the rotation to give him a taste of the speed and complexity of the NFL game, and so they can see how he's progressing.
An interesting question to me, is, what do the Niners do if Jimmy plays at the level of 2019 or better and stays healthy all year? Everyone assumes he's gone in the offseason. I know it would be a good money move, but I don't think it's such a slam dunk that they'd move on from him if he has a really good year, say with a good postseason run. Would be an interesting situation, for sure.
If Jimmy plays well this season, it'll just up his trade value. No way is he coming back next year win or lose.
I disagree.
If Lance absolutely bombs. And Jimmy improves dramatically. Jimmy will be back.
I just don't expect it.
How can Lance possibly bomb if he's not going to be playing this year? Jimmy is going to be the starter this year, it'll be Trey's team in '22.
I assume he's talking about TC, pre-season games (however many there may be) and week to week practices in general.
Having said that imo I don't see Jimmy being back in 2022.
Precisely.
KS will be evaluating Lance starting in training camp. He said that he's itching to get started. I expect that there'll be a thorough evaluation and Shanahan will gauge his readiness from there. If he absorbs everything quickly and shows he can play, coupled with JG experiencing some hiccups, he may get his opportunity sooner rather than later. But if he practices like he's too raw, he'll sit. Especially if Garoppolo's play improves dramatically and Trey's development isn't as rapid as expected. Then all bets are off for 2022.
My expectation, and hope, is that Lance is the sleeping superstar the Niners project him to be. His development will be rapid and he'll be starting before the season is done. Mostly because his physical attributes shades JG's by quite a lot; his potential, if realized, opens up a Pandora's box for Shanahan to exploit.
As KS has said, whatever happens, it'll be obvious to all. If a change is warranted, it'll happen naturally.
