They made this move because they didn't see any other way to prevent what happened this season from happening again. And if 2021 is a repeat of 2020, likely someone is going to get fired or at least be put on the hot seat.

No idea why you are so keen to put Shanahan forward for the hot seat. Odd, really.

I'm not keen about it, but it's reality and it helps explain why they made this move despite not being thrilled about any of the top QBs.

That summarises it really. You are not thrilled about the top qb's. They clearly are or else THEY WOULDNT HAVE MADE THE TRADE. Clear?

I think Shanny's gonna end up finding that HOT SEAT if he takes a QB that everyone is against and can't prove them wrong.

Well, if he starts Garoppolo whilst developing whichever qb he drafts, not sure that this will both him for a couple of years.

WE gonna see the RIVERS and BREES scenario all over again ???

You're speculating as much as I am. They made the trade because they thought it was the best move available when compared with trading for a vet or sticking with Jimmy. That doesn't mean they're thrilled about it or even optimistic.

What we do know is that it has been reported that they were in trade talks regarding Sam Darnold up until they decided the Jets were taking too long to decide and then moved up. It's also been reported that they were interested in Watson, presumably up until the allegations against him came to light. They were at least involved on some level in discussions regarding Stafford. If they were truly in love with one of these prospects, the other moves don't make a lot of sense. No, it points more to them looking for any possible alternative to having to hope that Jimmy just stays healthy.

I am glad you admit to speculating. And I notice the way you try to put a negative spin on it. To say that they weren't thrilled with the trade is nothing short of nonsense though. If they weren't thrilled they simply wouldn't have made it.

I am speculating? No. https://www.49erswebzone.com/articles/145831-49ers-explain-why-felt-urgency-trade-worth-cost/

That's a pretty different tone from Schefter... he still guesses Schefter "today" but said the above.

This just doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't the decision have been made before we traded our future? Something just isn't adding up here...

You'd think. This has been one of my biggest concerns from the get go. If they didn't have a solid guy in mind and still aren't sure it seems pretty stupid

They made the move out of desperation most likely. They know that if Jimmy goes down again and they have yet another losing season, they could very easily be fired, so they traded up to try and save their jobs. They may not actually feel confident in any of the QB prospects available. This would also explain the Mac Jones rumors as Shanahan probably wants to play it as safe as possible and when in doubt, he's always going to go for the guy that most closely resembles Kirk Cousins.

With this move, they're not thinking Super Bowl, they're thinking about how to win enough to avoid being fired.

They were not in any sort of jeopardy of being fired coming into this offseason. So making a desperation move to try and save their asses makes no sense.

Context went right out the window with this post.

Context meaning excuses? History has shown it to be irrelevant. The job is ultimately based on results. Tomsula had a lot of "context" for why we went 5-11 and he was still fired. Same with Chip Kelly. I'm not saying those guys were as good of HCs than Shanahan, but while having valid reasons why you lost might help you in your future job interviews, it won't stop you from getting fired. Not in the NFL.

If Jed felt those first couple of seasons losses meant that much he would not have given both extensions during last off-season and would have waited to see how 2020 would go.

Again context went out the window with your post. Kyle and John are not on any sort of hot seat and this trade wasn't out of desperation to save their jobs.

Pederson signed an extension with the Eagles and two years later he was fired (and they actually won a Super Bowl!). Extensions mean nothing if you don't perform.

Looks like Shanny and Lynch 'silenced' the leaker

Or they purposefully leaked the Mac Jones info because they actually prefer Fields over Wilson, and wanted to prevent the Falcons from offering the Jets a crap ton for the 2nd pick to go up and get Fields.
Schefter 5 days ago- "I would be SHOCKED if the Niners didn't take Mac Jones."
Schefter yesterday- "If I had to guess I'd say they draft Mac Jones."
lol shows he's just speculating like everybody else and doesn't have real insider info into who the Niners are going to draft

Or it was just a bunch of people grasping at straws making guesses just like all of us here in the zone.

Do you think he would have been fired if they had won the Super Bowl this year? On some level, it's always boils down to winning and losing games.

However, regardless of why Pederson was fired, it is an example that shows that being extended doesn't mean that you're suddenly immune to being fired.

Maybe the most realistic statement you've ever posted.

Schefter needs to stick to reporting things that have just happened and not trying to predict what will happen.
