This just doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't the decision have been made before we traded our future? Something just isn't adding up here...

You'd think. This has been one of my biggest concerns from the get go. If they didn't have a solid guy in mind and still aren't sure it seems pretty stupid

They made the move out of desperation most likely. They know that if Jimmy goes down again and they have yet another losing season, they could very easily be fired, so they traded up to try and save their jobs. They may not actually feel confident in any of the QB prospects available. This would also explain the Mac Jones rumors as Shanahan probably wants to play it as safe as possible and when in doubt, he's always going to go for the guy that most closely resembles Kirk Cousins.

With this move, they're not thinking Super Bowl, they're thinking about how to win enough to avoid being fired.

They were not in any sort of jeopardy of being fired coming into this offseason. So making a desperation move to try and save their asses makes no sense.

They're not stupid. They know 3 10 loss seasons in 4 years is not good. Shanahan is the first HC in franchise history to have 3 10 loss seasons. They've built up a lot of goodwill, but they know that they'll run out of it eventually if they don't find a way to fix the injury problems, especially at the QB position. They made this move because they didn't see any other way to prevent what happened this season from happening again. And if 2021 is a repeat of 2020, likely someone is going to get fired or at least be put on the hot seat.

Context went right out the window with this post.

Context meaning excuses? History has shown it to be irrelevant. The job is ultimately based on results. Tomsula had a lot of "context" for why we went 5-11 and he was still fired. Same with Chip Kelly. I'm not saying those guys were as good of HCs than Shanahan, but while having valid reasons why you lost might help you in your future job interviews, it won't stop you from getting fired. Not in the NFL.

If Jed felt those first couple of seasons losses meant that much he would not have given both extensions during last off-season and would have waited to see how 2020 would go.

Again context went out the window with your post. Kyle and John are not on any sort of hot seat and this trade wasn't out of desperation to save their jobs.

Pederson signed an extension with the Eagles and two years later he was fired (and they actually won a Super Bowl!). Extensions mean nothing if you don't perform.

Pederson and Kyle's situations are nothing alike. Pederson wasn't fired for winning and losing games.

Do you think he would have been fired if they had won the Super Bowl this year? On some level, it's always boils down to winning and losing games.

However, regardless of why Pederson was fired, it is an example that shows that being extended doesn't mean that you're suddenly immune to being fired.

There were other issues at play in Philly.

This entire speculative and illogical take seems like something straight out of a Grant Cohn tweet IMHO.

He's for sure a top insider but to use the word "shocked", which makes it sound like you know something and you're almost positive it will happen. Then just a few days later change your tune to "well if I had to guess", it puts out a completely different tone. He very may well be right about Jones but I think it just proves he's speculating instead of having any actual insider info on the pick, which a lot of people assume when Schefter says something. Attaching his name to things holds weight to a lot of people so unless he knows something why use such a strong word of "shocked" if you're admitting to just guessing in a different interview? Just strange to me.

I don't think he ever said he'd be shocked if mac jones wasnt the pick. I'm pretty sure he said he wouldn't be shocked if mac jones was the pick. That's a big difference. I think grant cohn and someone else spinned it a different way.

Kyle is not looking for Greta individual players. He's looking for great system guys.

If Kyle had it his way, it'll be Mac Jones. But if it's a consensus team pick involving scouts and other personnel, it'll be Fields for sure. I will not believe that the team consensus has Jones graded higher than Fields.
