They've built up a lot of goodwill, but they know that they'll run out of it eventually if they don't find a way to fix the injury problems, especially at the QB position. They made this move because they didn't see any other way to prevent what happened this season from happening again. And if 2021 is a repeat of 2020, likely someone is going to get fired or at least be put on the hot seat.

I think Shanny's gonna end up finding that HOT SEAT if he takes a QB that everyone is against and can't prove them wrong.

I'm not keen about it, but it's reality and it helps explain why they made this move despite not being thrilled about any of the top QBs.

Context meaning excuses? History has shown it to be irrelevant. The job is ultimately based on results. Tomsula had a lot of "context" for why we went 5-11 and he was still fired. Same with Chip Kelly. I'm not saying those guys were as good of HCs than Shanahan, but while having valid reasons why you lost might help you in your future job interviews, it won't stop you from getting fired. Not in the NFL.
