Nelson would be a gadget player on this team. In 5 seasons he has a catch % of less than 46%. He only has 11 TDs and hasn't started that many games. He's a situational player who is 5'10" and 170 lbs. Not an every down guy. That's okay but I don't expect a lot from either one.

Austin will be used as a return man and someone who can take those end around as Deebo did. If he makes the team he's not gonna get many snaps in the offense other then those kinds of plays.

Honestly, I don't think that Shanny values traditional "outside" WR's. It appears to me that he prefers versatile, speedier, shiftier WR's. And that usually comes in smaller, lighter, less physical slot bodies. However, I do think Shanny has seen the value of having at least physical, tough WR's though. (Hence Deebo, Aiyuk, and Hurd.) I think Shanny's handling of Pettis bares that out. But there isn't one traditional "outside" WR on our roster. Outside of Deebo, Aiyuk, and Hurd, and to a lessor extent Bourne, none of our WR's (who'll actually make the team) are physical enough to be outside WR's. Austin, Nelson, James, Taylor, and Pettis (who's a goner) are just not physical enough to consistently get open on their own. They'll need to be schemed open by Shanny. And I think Shanny has realized that you just can't have an entire WR corps with a bunch of speedsters that lacks size and physicality.

Great observation, and the various NFL defenses (4-3, 3-4, blitz, zone, man etc...) kind of forces an OC to have varied personnel to give him the best kinds of mis-matches.

lol you are acting like Palmer has been out of the league for 10 years. He retired like 3 years ago. This guy is like 27 or 28.

I like Nelson more as a WR than Austin, but I like Austin more as a returner than Nelson. Nelson, despite his size, made a lot of contested catches. He has great focus, but doesn't have great hands (lots of bobbles and double-clutches). But the speed should make him dangerous with us if he makes the roster.

Personally, in my ideal world, you'd have Trent and Sweet on the left side as LT and LG, and use their speed with Mostert to force defenses to commit to stopping left side runs, and then boot to Kittle or sweep plays to Tavon or Nelson. I think with the left side speed that Trent and Sweet have, any slightest hesitation by the defense and mostert's going to rip a big one, and if defenses commit to those runs, a Kittle boot pass or Tavon/Nelson bubble screen/sweep to the right - and it's a TD waiting to happen.

He'll be wide open if our offense is 2nd in the league in run yardage this year.

Goodwin wanted to try out for the Olympics, I don't think his heart was in it last year and I also think he was either injured or recovering still from that concussion he had a couple of years ago, or at least the PSTD of that event.
