Yes.

You might feel they shouldn't take a cap hit but teams don't get to pay players and not have it count against their cap. The most basic way to understand this is they paid him a lot of money for 2024 and 2025 and had much smaller cap hits for those seasons than what they actually paid.

I don't care about 24/25 I mean the cap hit moving forward when we release him
There should only be DC of what's left of what we already paid him.. i thinking it's the 13m DC that's already on the books this year.

but Sportrac is saying the DC grows to a lot more if he is released? Idk

What's left of what we already paid him is 34m. This number is split over this season and next (which is allowed because the separation will occur post 6/1).

They will get a 4+m dollar credit to that 34m so we effectively have to account for 29m dollars on the cap over the next two years.

It's crazy I'm seeing a lot of people blaming the 49ers for this on social media and saying we are holding him hostage

A lot of people just lack critical thinking skills.

Even more people lack basic common sense.
I miss Jerry Rice, classy man, the GOAT, basically, the opposite of BA

Be careful, I wasn't there during that time but when I brought up Jerry as a class act there was a lot of posters saying he was a Diva.

Seems odd, especially in this environment, lol.

Understood. They have cap charges going forward (split over this season and next), once he's released or traded, because of the money they paid him for 2024 and 25.

I appreciate you, but you didn't really explain anything that I already knew . I'm advocating that the 49ers shouldn't incur any cap penalties upon his release since he's admitted himself he's taking the money and running to another team in the same conference non the less

Jerry is my favorite 9er of all time...maybe tied with Montana...

but things that were true about Jerry..

got caught up in asian (?) massage spot thing, caught hiding in a closet?

and as far as a diva... well I always bring this up when people talk bad about T.O. Something T.O. has never done is cause a scene when we were winning a game (actually a blow out). Jerry did this to Mooch on the sidelines on a Monday night game vs the Redskins.

but it's what ever...this is what made these players amazing.

He might have been, but there was no social media level of Diva-ness.

I understand my man. I'm trying to explain why there will be cap penalties, lol.

We can all bemoan the fact that this relationship has soured and Aiyuk is acting unprofessionally, but he was still a member of this team for the last two seasons and was paid for it. The team has to account for that on the cap.

They will likely attempt to recoup a couple extra million dollars because he abandoned the team in December of last year, and that will be credited towards those penalties if they're successful.

Be happy we're not stuck with an additional 26m in cap/cash hits, and we can be free of this dysfunction going forward. That is the remedy for Aiyuk's breach of contract.

Totally agree, this is a blessing in disguise. I'm just annoyed that we have to pay a cap penalty moving forward as a team when he was the one that quit, potentially playing another team that we meet in the playoffs

Well just remember, he did go out and play and shred his knee in service to the team. He rightfully is compensated for that.

Putting aside any additional factors, this became a disaster of a contract because he was injured. A contract we wouldn't have been able to get out of without significantly worse cap implications until at least after this coming season. Him being a saint wouldn't change that.
