Well just remember, he did go out and play and shred his knee in service to the team. He rightfully is compensated for that.
Putting aside any additional factors, this became a disaster of a contract because he was injured. A contract we wouldn't have been able to get out of without significantly worse cap implications until at least after this coming season. Him being a saint wouldn't change that.
I said outside of 24/25 because he did show up, 25 being arguable.
Aiyuk earned his 2024 salary, IMO. And a portion of his 2025 salary.
when you factor in him abandoning the team/meetings etc - I think that's breach of contract and a legitimate grievance can be made to get that year prorated and he has to return it. That's just my opinion on what will happen.
I think he will be forced to return a lot of his signing bonus. Signing bonuses are designed to account for the lifetime of the agreed upon contract. He was given $23M for four years and really only did 1.5 years of it.
grievance wise, that's only earning $8.625M of it. So I think niners will try to take back $14.375M of it.
if teams can take back signing bonuses from a contract cause a guy retires before the contract ends… they sure as hell can get it back if the player goes AWOL and breaks the contract, IMO.
