49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan Thread

I agree qnn, and would add just one other point. JimmyG was BBs fair haired boy, picked and raised and hand taught by Bellichek. No doubt in my mind he wanted to keep Jimmy and airmail Brady, but Kraft wanted no part of that. So when it came time to trade him or have him become a FA, he called the one best place he thot jimmy could go. 49ers. Kyle had already impressed BB by asking him for his advice in the SB loss. BB respected that....and then, as you mentioned there was the Mike connection. But BB didn't want the guy he had hand raised going to CLEVE or some dump like that. There are at least 20 crappy HCs in NFL and he didn't want jimmy wasted there either. So, thanks to the JL /Kyle axis, we got him. It wasn't as some have said blind luck. It was by intent. Bill Bellichek's intent. He didn't want to see his 3 yr project go to waste.

And based on the last 5 games of 2017, JimmyG didn't go to waste. Match made in heaven .,..with some assists.

The trade for Garoppolo was more Bellicheat than ShanaLynch. So I left that out. Having said that, I've loved most of the 2018 draft except for Kentavius. Now, don't get me wrong, he's a 49er so I'll support Kentavius. What I don't like is that there was edge rushers out there that could be had for the Kentavius pick. (again, even if the edge rusher picked at Kentavius' spot *didn't make the team,* it would still equal the result of Kentavius being IR'ed for a whole year plus). Buckner wasn't at fault, I think he was playing at the NT position and he communicated it to the Big end and also to the 3-tech, but I don't think the 3-tech (would that be Solomon?) communicated it to Dakota (or whoever was playing LEO at the time).

Just giving you a hard time! I don't mind the Kentavius pick as they also picked up really good prospects at--CB, S, WR, OL, LB, and DT. Only three offensive picks out of nine. Two explosive WRs who are also excellent return specialists, a top OT, a nice fit at LB...

I was sad that they didn't pick up a true edge guy but the way the draft broke it just didn't happen. Oh well, they aren't likely to be in the SB this year and edge rushers usually come in ready, for the most part.

What great edge guy was there when they picked Kentavius? Not one they liked or they would have made the pick.
Well any time you make the playoffs, you have a chance at a Super Bowl. I think out of 19+ trys, we got 5 super bowls out of those playoff appearances. ShanaLynch had an excellet draft - sans the edge rusher though, so I agree with you there.

I think there were talented edge rushers out there available in the 2018 draft. ShanaLynch said so:
"Those guys are difficult to find, first and foremost," Lynch said. "We felt like there were a couple guys who had an opportunity to be special there. You know, just where we were, we didn't have an opportunity or chose not to take them."
[…]
But when it came down to making a pick, they didn't see a player who provided an obvious upgrade over players already on the roster, including Cassius Marsh, Jerry Attaochu, Eli Harold and Arik Armstead.
"We have some pretty good players," Shanahan said. "Yeah, we'd love to add whoever the best pass-rusher is on the outside in the draft. We'd love to get a Von Miller, but you only get eight up on game day and you only get nine on our roster.

They just decided not to draft one. I'm of the opinion that Saleh could have been the deciding factor here if he really was more vociferous in his campaign to add a pass rusher in the draft. ShanaLynch is concerned about the overall team, and the OC opposite of Saleh is the HC, so obviously the OC outweighs the DC in a lot of decisions -- and I just think that combo of Kyle being both the HC *and* the OC outweighed Saleh in getting a pass rusher. As for John, John's going to want DB's as a former DB himself, and Kyle's going to want offensive players as the OC. It's interesting that the 2018 draft resulted in 3 DB's 2 WR's and *no* edge rushers.

I disagree. His respect for those two, as well as being in the NFC, is what got the deal done. You can be sure if it was any of the previous coaching carousel here it would not have happened. Saying they were 'lucky' to get him discounts their reputation and relationships in the league. More often than not, you make your own luck.

I think it starts with Mike Shanahan. I chanced upon this vid.

The Herd

Mike is friend with BB. Kyle then showed his metal in the SB against BB. Even going up to BB in the combine to talk about the SB loss, would be what BB would have done, since he was doing the same thing with Mike Shanahan every time he lose to Mike. Lots of professional respect from BB towards the Shanahan.

When time to trade Jimmy, I think BB had Kyle at the top of the list if not the only name. To BB, Jimmy's best chance to succeed is with Kyle coaching him

Just my opinion, but I think there was a chance (not a big chance) but a chance we could have gotten tom brady if they would have kept Garoppolo. I think (again just gut feeling since there's very little info on this) that Kraft is the one that decided to keep Tom and trade Jimmy. I think Bellicheat was in meetings with Kraft and really wanted to keep Jimmy and trade Brady - I think that's why a meeting of an hour or two, blossomed into an all day deal. (at least that what one article characterized their meeting to be).

Yeah, if it was up to BB alone, I think Brady gets moved. Pretty sure it would be more than a 2nd for TB That might be mortgage the future type of trade.

You can see why a football idiot like Grant could dislike Kyle and lash out in comical ways.....

I'm thinking ShanaLynch would have parted with a first and second for Tom Brady.

That was the main guy this was in response to. Cohnhead asked "what about soft tissue injuries in particular?" and Shanahan deftly tore him a new one. He's figured out Grant for the fraudulent beat reporter he is.

Kyle gave Cohn a condescending answer last season, too. He put that little dingleberry in his place.

Kyle is a much better man than I am. I would have shook the s**t out him by my second week on the job.
