That was the most demoralizing (well, as demoralizing as it gets in a fan of a sport sense) off season. Felt like a million miles away from being competitive and basically having a sledge hammer taken to the 3 straight title game appearance team.
I agree to a point, but going from Walsh to Seifert to Mariucci to Erickson to Nolan to Singletary was perhaps the greatest slide in coaching talent in NFL history! Just so agonizing to recall all of this! And it really started with the Yorks* and their failure to realize they didn't know enough to make good decisions. The last two on this list will go down in my coaching book of infamy!
For me it started with Mooch. George locked up 6 seasons with plus-plus OCs. So in that respect there wasn't a huge drop off of offensive excellence. I either wish George would have stayed longer and tried it with another OC or had George step aside and ride off in to the sunset with the SB29 victory. In this scenario, Mike Shanahan would have been elevated to HC and got to build the team as needed.
'97-'98 was the jumping off point and it coincided with Eddie leaving. I know he pulled the trigger on George and I never really liked that considering Mooch was the replacement. However, I still kinda believe if Eddie would have stayed we would have seen Mike Holmgren leading this team into the 2000's. I would have been more than done with that.
