After kicking the FG to go up 13-10, OAK answered with a TD drive. Carr made some very nice throws to convert a few chunk passing plays.

3Q 2nd & 7
OAK: Drive concept over the middle (red + orange) with a backside Deep Out
49ers will pattern match to help combat the trips bunch formation while Borland has the RB in man coverage, and Cox is manned up on the backside WR.

As the bunch starts to separate, the defenders sort out the assignments based on how the trips bunch disperses. DJ allows black to go by him because he knows McFadden (#30) is there to pick up black. DJ will take the second WR to come out of the bunch. Red goes inside so he is now Wilhoite's. Carr will quickly give the red light to the black route because no way he wins based on McFadden's positioning. Carr will then progress to the Drive concept.

Red continues across the field and Wilhoite passes red over to Reid. This allows Wilhoite to stay underneath and help play the passing lane to any inside breaking route to orange, which is exactly what orange is going to do. Carr will move off of orange. DJ helps to bracket orange. Below, Carr is looking at red and knows that if red is targeted, he'll get crushed by Reid who picks up coverage on red.

49ers do well to defeat the trips bunch as Reid, DJ, and McFadden match the patterns and man up. Carr moves to the backside Deep Out just in time to windup as the Deep Out enters his cut in the route. Carr is mid windup.

The color commentator gushed about Carr during the telecast after this play. Very nice throw and job of going through progressions that is allowed to take place because the OAK Oline gives good pass pro. The stunt by Justin and RayMac is easily snuffed. Check out the LG and how he simply passes Justin over to a team mate while he goes to help on Aldon.

+16 yards.

Later in that same drive
3Q 1st & 10
OAK: 2 man route using 8 man protection
49ers: Fire zone blitz (rush 5, 3 underneath zones, 3 deep)

49ers send 5 man pressure. TJE gets pressure just as Carr hits the top of his dropback, but he allows Carr to break pocket containment. Carr scrambles left.

Borland has yellow covered. The other route is bracketed.

Yellow stops his route while Borland continued towards the sideline. Carr is mid windup.

+27 yards

Three plays later, OAK scores a TD.

Down 17-13. The 49ers get the ball and go 3 and out.

1st & 10
49ers: Two In routes to attack the middle of the field. 7 man protection.
OAK: cover1 (5 man pressure)

Boldin and VD both have inside leverage on their defenders. This is a win since their routes break inwards. Blitz is picked up.

Kap is looking to VD as VD is about to break inside.

Kap starts his windup, but doesn't pull the trigger.

He moves to Boldin and short hops the throw.

Not sure why Kap didn't throw to VD. It's not huge separation, but Kap should read the leverage and throw it before or just as VD cuts. It's single coverage with no zone defenders in the middle of the field.

Definitely no reason he shouldn't have made the quick pass to Vernon right out of his cut, but the only thing I can imagine to explain why he didn't was #90 running free at him from that direction. The QB needs to make that pass and take that hit, as we all know. But I get why that might bother somebody just a little. lol
Can you post the play right before the dump off to Hyde? I want to see how open Gore was. IMO it was 2 plays back to back that the flat was wide open.

And I'm glad you said he's hesitating, said the same thing in the Kap thread.

So who gets the blame for these issues? Does roman deserve to get fired...does jim?

same drive
3Q 2nd & 10

49ers: Trap block on the 3-tech DT
Orange will get trap blocked by Boone as Looney (LG) and Staley move to the second level. The blocks by MMartin and Miller are key. #52 is Mack, OAK's 5th overall pick.

MMartin loses leverage on his block and has blocked the wrong shoulder of the nose tackle. The more that NT can get to his right, the more narrow the hole will be.

Miller engages his block with KMack.

With MMartin giving up ground, and Miller getting blown up, Gore has no hole to squeeze through.

+1 yard.

Yeah he did see #90 coming. The thing is, he double clutches and ends up throwing the ball while taking a hit anyways. Might as well throw the ball instead of double clutching. We've seen him take a hit to make a throw. We've seen him make good anticipation throws versus man coverage. He's pressing hard and it shows.

Sure thing. I'll complete this 3 and out and get back to that.

After a Delay of Game penalty.

3rd & 14
49ers: Sucker concept to Kap's left. SJ's Go route to give Boldin's Out some space.
OAK: shows blitz with a cover2 shell.

OAK rushes 4 (cover 2 man). Kap completes his dropback and is looking to his right. If this is man coverage, which it is, SJ's clearing route will give Boldin some room to catch and RAC with. The CB on SJ is peeking into the backfield.

Kap winds up to target Boldin's Out. Had SJ been a speed threat, maybe he can push his CB back. Instead, the CB is not threatened by SJ's speed and squats Boldin's Out route.

Kap does a good job to place the pass low where only Boldin can catch it. If he led Boldin properly, this is an INT by the CB that was on SJ. Gain of +11. Punt.

3Q 2nd & Goal

49ers: Slant-flat to Kap's right.
OAK: cover 2 zone

Kap completes his dropback and feels pressure given up by Looney. The safety on Boldin's side aggressively jumps the slant. This allows Boldin to get behind the safety.

Kap shuffles around the pocket to buy time and is mid windup.

Air mails it.

Incomplete.

There's two more chunk pass plays I was going to show for OAK but ehh. On the first one, 49ers rush 3 and drop 8. A deep crossing route is found for +22.

On the other play, OAK does a good job picking up a blitz (5 man pressure) to allow another deep crossing route to get open for +27. Drive results on a TD. gg

I'm trying to understand why our pass protection is so bad in comparison to other teams with much worse records

This probably has something to do with it (not an excuse for their play ON the field but it's a bit more understandable): http://blog.sfgate.com/49ers/2014/12/11/39806/

Eric Branch:

"We had a lot of injuries and that really hurt us this year," running back Frank Gore said to the Seattle media this week. "Each week there is someone missing. As an O-line, that can't happen. Even in camp, our whole O-line hasn't been together since we came in. As a lineman, you have to be together all the time. Practice, games, you can't have one guy here this week, one guy missing here next week. That will hurt you and I think it has hurt us this year."
