Here's an example of an area that Marcus Martin has to get better in his technique to hold up in pass pro.

The Raiders are going to come with heavy pressure. We have the right blocking assignments to pick everyone up and should have favorable matchups - we have Miller and MM on the LB's

You see the line does a good job picking up the blitzing LB's and getting the right assignments.

Several things I want to point out. Notice how Miller was able to stay low and get under the LB's pads - he hasn't been moved back, Martin is being driven back, and he's got 50 pounds on Miller.

with the blue lines I'm highlighting Staley, Boone and Iupati's technique. They're keeping their heads over their knees. You don't want to get your head out in front or behind your knees, you'll be off balance. So, you want to settle into a "box squat" position with power and keep your balance. Those three guys do a great job of that on this play - Staley, in particular has textbook technique right here. That's exactly what an O-lineman should look like in pass pro. At the snap, Martin came up and forward, this caused him to be off balance and let the LB get underneath his pads. From there, he lost and got driven back.

you see how Ck would've had a clean pocket if not for Martin getting driven straight back. He still delivers a nice ball on a slant to Crabs.

You never want to see your big money QB taking a shot to his legs from one of his own lineman getting thrown down....

But it was One-read by Design....

Do you think Marcus Martin is a bit overwhelmed mentally, or is it a rawness in his game that causes the lapses in technique? He is very young, even for rookie standards. It seems like he has the tools, but needs a couple years of development before he is playing at a high level. He may not start peaking for 3-4 more years.

And a quick note on Jonathan Martin. What traits does he bring to the team that warrant a roster spot, let alone starting at RT? He is weak in run blocking, and gets beat any way imaginable in pass pro. I guess his athleticism is ok, but why was he handed the RT position? Couldn't Boone have moved over?

After the nice punt return by Ellington, the 49ers methodically marched down the field .

1st & 10
Power play left: Gore run for +9 yards

2nd & 1
WR bubble screen: Crabs catch for +7 yards

1st & 10
Power play left: Gore run for +11 yards

1st & 10
WR bubble screen: Crabs catch for +7

2nd & 3
FB lead: Gore run for +3

1st and 9 (Goal)
Power play left: Gore run for -1 yard

2nd & 10 (Goal)
Incomplete pass. No one was open.

3rd & 10 (Goal)
This is the play that could have changed things.
49ers: Not sure what's going on here. I see a Smash by SJ + Crabs. Boldin with a pivot route (man buster route). VD with a Corner route and Hyde with a RB flare.
OAK: 3 man pressure with 8 in zone coverage.

Kap drops back and looks to Boldin. Staley gets beat around the edge.

With 8 back in coverage, and the middle of the field full of defenders, there's no way Boldin will be open. Staley's man will pressure Kap.

Kap rolls right and now the only routes in play are VD and Hyde.

Kap will target Hyde who has some room to run with just a safety in his way since the CB on that side of the field will stay with VD in case Kap targets VD.

The throw does not lead Hyde well as Hyde has to reach back and reach down to secure the catch. This breaks Hyde's stride.

The defenders converge to tackle Hyde 2 yards short of the goal line. No one was open on the trips WR side, but Kap does a good job to try and salvage the play by extending it. Then he throws a pass that doesn't have great location for Hyde to RAC with. FG unit.

After a nice drive in the first possession of the 2nd half, the 49ers could have gone up 17-10. Instead, it's 13-10.

After forcing a quick '3 and Out', the 49ers get the last possession of the 1st half. They would go on to kick a FG to tie it up at the half. Here's a big play from that drive.

2Q 1st & 10 (0:42 left in the half)

49ers: Levels concept to Kap's right. Levels is a nice concept that can be used versus man or zone. Against zone, like below, the slot WR (VD) pushes the zone defender in the area back. The outside WR (SJ) works the vacated area. To his left, Boldin looks to hit the seam in between the middle safety and the deep 1/3 defender lined up across from Crabs.
OAK: cover3

Kap takes the snap and looks for the seam route for the chunk play - big surprise. In his defense, the half is running out and a big play is needed. Shotgun snap, 3 step rhythm throw.

The pass has to be high to get over the reach of the underneath zone defender.

Nice, gutsy throw. It needs to be a laser to prevent the deep defenders from converging on the throw. +20 yards.

Another one-read by design.

You're wrong, again. lol

This was an easy 6 if Kaep understood how to check down. A pump fake at the ILB and a check down to Hyde. I think Kaep's problem is that he only reads what he sees. He is staring down his receivers and not watching the defense as a whole. A lack of peripherals and poor anticipation, and little trust that the WRs are going to be where they need to be.

Also, very poor play design/call IMO.

Nice. I'm sure we can all see when an Olineman/Dlineman wins or loses, but why did they win/lose. I really enjoy the Oline/Dline technique breakdowns.
If that's the case then they need to draft a QB within the top 3 picks this upcoming draft. There is no way that we should have to simplify the passing game any more at this point in his career. If he can't get a simplified passing game then its time to start looking elsewhere for our QB needs.

Exactly! Amen
These film analysis threads are my favorite on this site. I always felt like I knew a lot about the x's and o's of football, until I started reading these threads. I have learned a lot!
Great job in film breakdown as always. Awesome to come in here & find out what happens during the game & how it is all broken down for us. Thanks guys
My gosh that read on third goal should have been an immediate swing to Hyde. No defender even close. That's why the Raiders stink. I can't believe it took 3.5 seconds to get him the ball. This kind of stuff is just asinine. Its a bad implentation of bad offensive priorities. How can this be fixed without new perspectives on staff.
One thing Kap must engrave into his brain on plays where a Back goes on a swing route is that route will almost always be wide open vs any coverage except cover 2. This is mainly because the MLB will stay at home to spy Kap and it seems all other LBs sprint back at least 12 yards to close Kaps favorite 15-25 yards passes.

Passes to RB would be there all day for Kap if he wants to start a game out with patience and rhythm.

Russell killed the Niners by throwing to the wide open swing route on numerous occasions. The concept works if your QB knows how to use it.

I was the biggest Roman hater but now I'm confused because every week Kaep is not seeing open receivers or choosing the wrong read.

Inconsistent OL play, questionable play calls and a QB that is not reading the defense is the perfect trifecta for a crappy offense.

This describes the offense this year perfectly.

The triangle of suck...I do think the OL is the main culprit tho. We've been mediocre on the ground and down right bad in pass protection. I would have loved to see this offense with the type of play our OL gave us in '11-'13.

it's how Alex and company beat Seattle at the Stick in '12. we came out in the 2nd half checking it down over and over
