I think it's usually the 1st qtr to a whole half for most starters. The first 3 preseason games. The last preseason game, the starters would only play maybe 1 or 2 drives.
That's the format for preseason game #3... I'd be surprised if Kaep lasts past the first drive... wouldn't be surprised if Gore, Vernon, Staley, RayMac, Bowman, A. Davis don't even see the field.
This ..apparently this is everybody's first preseason

And last year Alex played one drive and threw 3 passes for 16 yards...2011 was entirely different with a complete regime change coming into their 1st year

I understand each year is different. And it's the coaches discretion. That's why I said usually 1-2 qtrs. They may rotate the starting qb with the 2nd qb, one qtr each in the first half. Each starting unit like the O-line, RB, WR, QB, etc can have extended period of play depends on what they want to see out of them.

Starters have never played 2 quarters in the first preseason game.. they don't play even 1 quarter in the first preseason game. New Orleans was the exception which already posted by Valrod was due to Alex getting sacked all the time.

I don't see how that's relevant. If Smith is getting pummeled, why would they played him and the offense a full qtr. In certain year the starting offense line would get a half while they replaced the skill positions with backups. Just depends on what they want to see out of the unit.

nice complete avoiding the point that is being made..
Starters don't play 1-2 quarters in the 1st preseason game. It's not that hard of a concept to grasp
