Should be a very entertaining pre season. Minus the 3rd game I wouldn't play the starters too long. Just enough to shake off the rust. Nothing for almost every one of the 22 starters to prove. No need to risk injuries. We have a ton of 2nd and 3rd stringers who are in good battles that we need to see more of.
Thoughts on playing time for Broncos game and the rest of the pre season:
Colt McCoy I would play 3/4 of a half since he is new to the system and we need to have him ready in case he has to start this year. Let Scott Tolzien and BJ Daniels each have a quarter. We need to find out if Tolzien is worth re-signing after this year or if BJ Daniels can be our 3rd QB of the future. Of course won't be judged just on this pre season alone though.
Not that our RB's will break it into quarters as we will likely substitute in and out or have more than one back in at a time but Hunter I would give a few series to less than a quarter if he is ready. Don't want to push him too much. James I would give plenty of work at PR/KR to see if he is ready to take over as the starter there. He's worked hard and should be much more comfortable back there this year. He was pretty shaky last pre-season. As for him at RB he should get a quarter or less. I think Jewel Hampton deserves a quarter, we need to see if this guy is good enough to take Dixon's spot. Also, will he be playing on ST? Dixon should get some time as well; I'm glad he has finally realized he isn't a speed back and is starting to run like a short yardage back is suppose to. DJ Harper should get a few series but probably won't see significant time until game 4. He is fighting for a PS spot.
At FB no reason to play Bruce Miller that much. I'd expect Tukuafu and Dixon to get significant time. We already cut Schepler and Debniak is on IR.
As for the offensive line again we don't need to see the starting 5 much at all. We need to get Kilgore and Looney significant time at center and guard. Snyder shouldn't need much time to gel with these guys; we know what he brings. We need to get Wiggins significant playing time this pre season as he is the likely 3rd tackle if we keep one. Others that need plenty of work this pre season include Al Netter, Patrick Omameh, Carter Bykowski, Wayne Tribue and Sherman Carter. We need to know if any of these younger guys have a future with us but mostly I want to see Kilgore, Looney, and Wiggins.
Then there is the WR's which is the most up in the air right now. Boldin shouldn't get more than a few series. Manningham probably doesn't get any work this pre season. Williams shouldn't get too much this game; best to ease him in but later on should get a little more. The good news with that is Jenkins (especially), Patton, Collie, Lockette, Hall and Moore should get a ton of time as we don't know what they will bring. Just don't see Hawkins, Osgood, Chuck Jacobs (unless PS) as part of our future and wouldn't take away many reps at all from the other guys I listed earlier. Jenkins and Patton are locks IMO but that means depending on if Manningham goes to PUP or not that 1-2 of Collie, Lockette, Hall and Moore will make the team. Doubt we keep 7.

As for the defense I don't think anyone on the starting front 7 minus possibly Ian Williams needs much time at all this pre season. I'd expect Dorsey to get some time but Tukuafu, Dobbs, Okoye, Jerod-Eddie, Divens and Purcell to get significant time. Believe it's Jerod-Eddie's last year to make the squad as he isn't PS eligible anymore. As for Dobbs and Tukuafu we need to see a lot out of them this pre season and year as they are FA's after the season. They could be battling each other for the last DL spot, could both make it or could be battling Okoye and his potential for a spot. Maybe Carradine ends up on the PUP and all 3 make it who knows. Also, seems unlikely he would get cut but Dial could be playing for a roster spot.
ILB and OLB are also up in the air. Wilhoite, Moody, Stupar, Travis Johnson... Skuta vs Cam Johnson at OLB... Lemonier and Harrison are locks imo.
S which is another one up in the air. Reid vs Dahl vs Spillman vs Robinson at FS and then McBath, Thomas, Ventrone all fighting for backup spots at FS/SS.
CB up in the air as well. Asomugha should get some time; I think he's a near lock so we won't play him a ton. Brock and Cox should see significant time as should Cooper, Morris and Rose.
For those that don't want to read all that I'll sum it up with I don't expect much time for the 1st stringers. We have a lot of 2nd and 3rd string battles and the good news is they should receive significant time to make their case. One added benefit of having the 1st stringers pretty much set.
