Tough finding time to get on the board. I did grade Gabbert the best QB in the draft, followed by Dalton and Newton. OTC had the same top three. We split apart after the top three.

As for Smith, the pick is very good at this point. Was it the best pick? No. There are guys better, like Watt. But, I think he has outperformed my expectations. He is still a project, since he is not starting, and limited to rushing the QB. He needs to become more well-rounded by dropping well into coverage. Right now, he is a one-trick pony. Very good at the one trick, but needs a lot of help to make him a star.

Back in April, The draft 'guru' Rob Rang shared his insights on the possible development of Robert QUinn and Aldon Smith. I guess i overlooked this because its already winter time and I'm just now reading these quotes. Anyways, I thought I'd share this with any others who may also find this interesting...Rob rang said the following after the 2011 draft ended.

"I would have taken Gabbert and potentially Robert Quinn over Aldon Smith at seven," Rang said. Quinn went to St. Louis at No. 14. "To have Chris Long on one side as your base end and then have Robert Quinn's explosiveness on the other side, I mean, he reminds me a little bit of Leonard Little, but bigger," Rang said.

"You watch, Robert Quinn is going to be a better player for the Rams at 14 than Aldon Smith will be for the 49ers at seven."

I wonder if Rang is starting to feel like an idiot now.

One man's junk is another man's treasure. For us we didn't need a linemen. Quinn was more of a lineman, so was Aldon, but Aldon had played some standup and OLB and had better potential to adapt to OLB. Like everything else, how they fit your scheme can be a big factor on a players success.
I never understand the "Aha! Gotcha crowd!" As if the player is their lover, dad, brother, best friend. Analysts make their predictions, and they don't apologize in advance if they get it wrong. Nobody is perfect. The "Aha" crowd is filled with people who either have severe insecurity issues, or live in some strange world where anybody that makes an unfavorable view toward "one their own" is some great villain. Just juvenile idiocy.

So what Rang made his call, that appears at this time to be wrong? Should he "apologize", feel sorry, feel like an "idiot"? Flat out crazy person talk.

I'm waiting for the first member of "Aha" to publically "apologize" for their views on Taylor Mays, Chilo Rachal, the Great Nate Davis, Ashlie Lelie, Thomas Clayton, and the other 99% inaccuracies that flow out of their mouth. Only when the planets align, and they hit one of their predictions, do they emerge out of their caves, beat their chests and say, "I told you so".

its the arrogance attached to the opinions, he (or any other draft guru) could say "in my opinion so and so will be better than so and so".....but look at his quote, its aggressive "you watch Robert Quinn is going to be a better player for the Rams at 14 than Aldon Smith will be for the 49ers at seven".....well mr rang, we're watching and dont see it, of course theres going to be a backlash

Dahl would be a much better interior player. We signed him as a FA, he walked and went to ATL. I think he had a couple of very good
seasons there. He's kind of like Kevin Gogan as far as attitude.

I don't have a problem with you hyping up Watt as he's been playing very well but you need to stop this crap. This team needed a pass rusher in the worst way and it looks like they've found a very good one in Aldon Smith. They have THE best 3-4 DE in the game right now in Justin Smith and a guy who is playing very well on the other side in Ray McDonald.

JJ Watt is a very good player but he doesn't improve this team as much as Aldon Smith. So stop acting like drafting him would've been the smarter move. You questioned the McDonald signing, you were wrong there too. Enough.

a) he has dropped back on a couple of occasions, but if does it is a waste, cause he best serves the team rushing with those long and strong arms of his
b) However Baalke has said from the get go his job is to rush the QB and contain the run when it isn't. Just because he isn't starting doesn't mean he is a project. Keeping him out for passing situations also helps keep him fresh and strong. We did it with Fred Dean and Haley in the begining. You can have Watt, I'll keep Aldon.

I still say it was the best pick for who was there (as we all know they couldn't trade out to a spot they wanted). Gabbert? I know you wanted him, but he hasn't impressed me yet, plus it wouldn't have benifited the team this year like Smith has. Guys like Demarcus Ware are hard to come by, just look around the league.

A lot of people weren't familiar with him. I was one. However, I didn't react like some people and went off on a tagent and rant. Instead, I checked out details on him that were available minus the opinions of prognisticaotrs. What I saw was a kid that in his freshman year, that played in a tough conference get 10+ sacks. Then the following year despite missing three games and playing on a bad leg still get half what he did the previous year. This made me feel the guy had heart and was a sophmore. If we didn't get a leg injury, he would have gotten another 10+ sack season and might have surpassed Von Miller. Then you hear about his arm length. Watch Mizzou play him all over the field in different positions. Quinn was a one trick pony I felt and missing a season because lack of common sense worried me. Still does.
i'll give rang credit, he responded to my tweet, asked him if he still felt quinn was better, his response...."Stand behind grade, but give SF/Smith credit. Undeniable impact."

Fangio was just on KNBR an hour ago and Aldon came up. He said the lock-out impacted him as much as anybody with the position change, but he's made great strides with his technique over the last couple of weeks in particular and is ready to do more than rush the passer . . . IF NEEDED.

there are plenty of people who have said that they were totally wrong on Davis/Mays/Rachal, etc. All they said was wow, we were totally wrong on this guy. He sucks. And then they move on. You know why you haven't seen it??? Because they're low key about it and just admit it and move on. We don't expect essays from you claiming that you were wrong. Hell, we don't even expect you to claim you were wrong.

Rather, people would prefer that you not always talk about how right you are, in light of the fact that you're often wrong about many other players/things. Not that there's anything bad about being proven wrong, especially since I think you often give good analysis/reasoning behind your posts.
THANKS for this!

I love it when these so-called experts get called on their mistakes and BS crap. Is this the same clone who said Pays Harrilson was going to be an incredicle sacker? Sorry, so long ago I don't have a link.
