MadDog thank you for your projections, opinions, and honesty. Instead of bashing Rob Rang, MadDog or someone else it is time we give Baalke credit for a solid draft.

Aldon Smith, Kendall Hunter, Chris Culliver, Miller have all contributed to our 10-2 record. Kaepernick, Kilgore will get a chance in a few years.
How folks never take time to post when these guys are correct? and who is to say he is wrong? Neither guy has played an entire season yet. I love it how fans say let's wait and see when a guy struggles in his 1st year, but if a guy plays well he's already a proven commodity. Like there is no such thing as a sophomore slump or a career ending injury. Gotta have perspective.

That is a totally different crowd than the "Aha" group, because they know that people are not perfect. The "Aha" crowd always runs away like cockroaches when they are proven wrong, then re-emerge after their three legged pony at 99-1 odds wins.

The rational people on the board can understand why I originally gave Smith a "C" grade after the draft due to better players on the board. The others take it as one of the great offenses in modern history, then make up stories about how I "hated" Smith, or graded Quinn better (which I didn't).

lulz sound like u mad.

listen, you went on and on about how this was a bad pick for us and there were better guys out there. i get that the draft is a crapshoot. i mean look at chris culliver vs. patrick peterson (you also had a 6th or 7th round grade on culliver at CB). so no one is saying that you have to get 100% correct.

but if you're going to go to all this effort and walk around high and mighty with your draft predictions then you're going to have to eat some crow when you are wrong. aldon smith is a great pick at #7 and he has produced. now you can throw out whatever garbage about one trick pony, he's only playing DE, he's only on the field rushing the passer, etc. you can use whatever excuse you want for his success but the bottom line is he has had a really good rookie season and you were wrong. you were wrong about gabbert. you were wrong about a lot of guys and that's nothing to be ashamed of as long as you come out and say "damn you know what i was wrong".

pretty sure everyone has opinions about guys coming into the draft, but not everyone puts their opinions out there in a very matter-of-fact type manner. those that do need to own up when they are proven wrong about a guy!
You make an important point with the bolded, IMHO, not because it might humiliate anyone, even momentarily, but because doing so allows a return to civil discussion. IMHO.

We've all seen that arguing with someone--about Alex Smith for example--can lead to very diverse opinions. But if the discussion leads only to two opposing camps who cannot talk about him, or any other player, without calling each other names, then what's the point?

Willingness to admit that one's position might be mistaken in some way eliminates hard feelings and allows for further, civil discussion.

Refusing to do so, refusing to admit to any kind of mistake, seems to lead to childish, boorish behavior, which doesn't encourage civil discussion of any topic.

Refusing to admit to a mistake, refusing to admit to being misled by what appeared to be the "facts" about a player at some point in time, for example, can make a poster appear to be bullheaded, stubborn, arrogant, self-righteous, etc.

Such posters open themselves up to ridicule from other posters.

It may be sad, or entertaining, or both, to watch a poster turn himself, or herself, into a laughingstock on the board--when all they really have to do is say something like: "You know, I was wrong about that player, he's really playing much better than I thought he could, based on the information I had at the time."

"Owning up" to it, as you say, is the only way for a poster to restore his or her credibility. IMHO.

We're each responsible for our own credibility, no one else can revive it if we've made a mistake and refuse to own up to it.

Why that seems to be so difficult for some posters is a mystery. Perhaps they don't understand the importance of "eating crow" or "owning up" to a mistake.
this is some bullshi

With an edit: I actually enjoy reading Maddog's stuff because I don't pay enough attention to players, schools, performance to really understand the thinking that goes into making a pick like this.

Keep it up Maddog.

I have spoken to Rob Rang about the matter, and here is what he will say regarding future 49ers draftee, Virginia CB Chase Minnifield in 2012. He gave me a sneak preview:
"Chase Minnifield is an average to very good player, who has fourth round, third round, second round, or even first round value to a team that plays in any form of defense. And, I can say with some to zero certaintly that he will be a successful starter, or maybe a nickel or dime corner, or someone who can fill-in spot duty when all the corners go down to injury. I grade him somewhere between the third to sixteen best corner. The Niners get a grade somewhere in the range from a D- to A+ for this selection. I hope I have not offended any readers in my analysis, because I do not mean to cause any emotional harm. I want to apology in advance for my analysis if it is incorrect."
aldon smith is a beast

I think a more appropriate screen name for you would be MadFemaleDog49er

I was right about Aldon but wrong about Davis. I really hated the Davis pick. People are critical of you MadDog not because of you "being wrong" about Aldon, it is because in the face of obviously being wrong you continue to hype inferior players like Watt as being bettor to justify your prior claims.

And someone's credibility takes yet another hit. SMH.
Being a draft guru must be like writing the astrology column for the newspaper: you just make stuff up, because you have no idea.

Seriously, if these guys had any idea what they were talking about, they'd be NFL Assistant Scouts.

But do you know what would give them MORE credibility and benefit of the doubt from others?

Saying "I was wrong."

Good luck getting most of these "experts" to ever do that.
1-4 fourth round grade nice and specific.
