Franco Harris, but Dixon has to generate the productivity and durability.

The Barlow and Means suggestions are also valid at this time.

Earl Campbell? Give me a break. Dude was the most powerful and courageous RB that I have ever seen, year-in and year-out. Campbell could have (should have) won the NFL MVP Award at least 3-4 times. He was that good. And, yes, I saw Jim Brown play in his prime. Campbell was better.

I hope that Dixon adapts to "dropping the hammer" and punishing would-be tacklers. Then we can talk about som different comparisons. All-in-all though, a fun thread for comment.

You best be believin'
I won't be deceivin'!
I've seen him make some good plays in the regular season. I've also seen him make some bad decision. In all, I haven't seen him touch the ball enough for him to remind me of anyone.

My only complaint is that for a big guy he runs really small, almost like a scat back. I'm not sure if he can learn to run big since it's more of a mentality. Either you love contact (Gore & Willis) or you don't (Gin, Crabtree).
Comparing dixon to barlow is plain mean. Dixon is an effort guy. I never seen that with barlow.

Dixon can become a very productive back in the NFL....

I hope he does.

I like the Franco Harris comparison. He reminds me more of how Dixon ran at MSU. A little more control and a little more upright.

Dixon does need to start hitting the hole and quit dancing. I think Dixon has been coached by Rathman to run lower and he's still adjusting to it. That combined with the reports of his excitement levels makes me think he's got too much adrenaline and it's causing him to make mistakes. We'll see how things turn out. Hopefully we get to see him run tomorrow.

Again, I wasn't saying Dixon was as good as Campbell, just that their style, and the way they look while carrying the football is similar. I know Campbell was an incredible power back (him and Bettis are my favorites) and I totally agree that there's no way you can even put the two on the same planet at this point.

However, I think you're completely wrong about Dixon not "dropping the hammer". The guy can hit with some serious power. He also runs with a lot of power and drive. The question is, will he be able to do it during the regular season. He did it during the preseason... guy was lighting up defenders all over the place. He's only had 24 carries so far in his rookie year. We'll see how things go.

Just for fun, short clips of Dixon from preseason and college:

A smaller Earl Campbell.
