Who is the most important second-year player on the San Francisco 49ers roster?
A player's sophomore NFL season is often a pivotal stage in their development. After experiencing the demands of a full NFL offseason and regular season, many young players begin to play faster and more confidently as the game starts to slow down for them.
When identifying the most important second-year player for each NFL team, Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon acknowledged that many fans would likely point to 49ers defensive lineman Mykel Williams, the team's 2025 first-round draft pick.
Williams appeared in just nine games as a rookie before suffering a torn ACL, making his second NFL season critical to his long-term development. However, Gagnon believes another young defender carries even greater importance for the 49ers in 2026.
Instead, he selected defensive tackle Alfred Collins as San Francisco's most important second-year player.
"No. 11 overall pick Mykel Williams probably comes to mind first, but he'll be hard-pressed to make an early impact coming off a torn ACL," Gagnon wrote. "Combine that with the fact Nick Bosa is also recovering from the same injury, and you can see why so much could fall on Collins—the team's second-rounder—to hold down the fort up front alongside newcomer Osa Odighizuwa."
Collins finished his rookie campaign with 17 tackles, one tackle for a loss, four quarterback hits, one sack, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. He also logged 492 defensive snaps, playing 48 percent of the 49ers' defensive snaps, according to Pro Football Reference.
It's worth noting that Collins and fellow 2025 draft pick CJ West earned the lowest overall Pro Football Focus grades among 49ers players last season (35.0). A significant Year 2 jump from either player would provide a major boost to San Francisco's defensive front.
Star linebacker Fred Warner believes the 49ers' young defensive line trio is poised for a breakout season in 2026.
"A three-headed monster at D-line in Alfred Collins, CJ West, Mykel coming off injury," Warner said. "I think all three of those guys have an opportunity to really take a next step."
If Warner's prediction proves accurate, Collins could emerge as one of the most important contributors to the 49ers' defensive success this season.
