Nate Davis 2009 Pre-Season So, my intention was for me to put this up on Friday to have something to look at before the game, but this little project ended up taking me ALOT more time than I thought. I’m very happy that the Niners won this weekend and I’m not suggesting a QB change, but I thought we might like to see the 49ers current #3 QB and possible QB of the future in action. I’ve gone and done something a little loony. ;-) I like what I see from Nate Davis and I realized that we have probably seen the last of him for some time. Buried at #3 on the depth chart, he probably won’t see the light of day this season…and that’s not all bad. Maybe a redshirt year is exactly what he needs. Anyway, we are now into the games that mean something and we won’t be thinking too much about one Nate Davis. As such, I decided to put together a package of every pass he threw in the preseason and a breakdown of his performance. If we do end up having QB trouble this year, at least we’ll have something to look at when his name comes up. This is my first attempt at video editing, so be kind. ;-) Enjoy. Raiders Game: 1)First past…low and behind Spurlock. Looks like nerves just got to him. Bad pass. 0 for 1 2)Gets early pressure, scrambles out of the pocket, throws it away. Good decision…nothing there. 0 for 2 3)Stands tall and hits a nice touch pass to TE Finley. 8 yards 4)Pressured again, another throw away. 1 for 4 8 Yards 5)Nice pass to Hill for a first down. 13 yards. 2 for 5 21 Yards 6)Incomplete pass. May have been a misread by Davis or Finley. Either way, bad pass. 2 for 6 21 Yards 7)Pressured again, scrambles again, throws a DART to Delanie Walker for 27 yards. NICE. 3 for 7 48 Yards 8)Nice 1 yard TD pass to Delanie Walker. 4 for 8 49 Yards 1TD 9)Another nice pass…2-Point Conversion to Delanie Walker. 4 for 8 49 Yards 1TD 10)Pressure and another throw away. He seems to be content to throw it away what it’s not there. 4 for 9 49 Yards 1TD 11)Nice throw to Jason Hill over the middle. Davis seems poised back there under pressure. 5 for 10 64 Yards 1TD 12)3 Yard pass to Hill. Davis seems to have something with Hill, they play well together. 6 for 11 67 Yards 1TD Cowboys Game: 13)Quick WR screen route than Davis misses badly. Bad Pass. 6 for 12 67 Yards 1TD 14)7 yard screen to Kory Sheets. 7 for 13 74 Yards 1TD 15)NICE. Davis looks CALM. Drops back, stands tall, hits Delanie Walker for 20 yards on 3rd and 1. He seems to have good communication with Walker as well. 8 for 14 94 Yards 1TD 16)WOW. Nate scrambles and fires a ROCKET to Spurlock on the sideline. 15 yards. Impressive arm…and ACCURATE. 9 for 15 109 Yards 1TD 17)3 nice play in a row. Nate gets pressured, steps up in the pocket and drills a pass to Finley at the 1. Gain of 19 yards This is EASILY Nate’s best drive to date. Kory Sheets runs it in on the next play. 10 for 16 138 Yards 1TD 18)5 Yard pass to Sheets. Missed this one on the video. 11 for 17 143 Yards 1TD 19)Incomplete pass on a screen to Sheets. Sheets just dropped it. 11 for 18 143 Yards 1TD 20)LOW pass to Brit Miller in the flat who makes a very nice catch and picks up the first down. Better Play by Miller than Davis. 11 yards. 12 for 19 155 Yards 1TD 21)Pass on third and long complete for 3 yards to Brit Miller. 13 for 20 158 Yards 1TD 22)Two Minute Drill: 1st pass Nate is pressured and throws low and incomplete over the middle. 13 for 21 158 Yards 1TD 23)Davis double pumps and guns it to Zeiglar on the sideline. Not sure if it’s knocked away or dropped. Incomplete. 13 for 22 158 Yards 1TD 24)Davis makes a rookie (or Brett Favre) mistake here. He gets flushed out of the pocket and heaves the ball downfield. Should have been intercepted or incomplete, but the Niners get lucky and they get a Pass Interference. I do have to admit tho, he threw the ball 40 yards in the air on a dead run and falling backwards. 13 for 22 158 Yards 1TD 25)Deep pass to Zeiglar. Looks like it was just a bit long. 13 for 23 158 Yards 1TD 26)Checkdown to Kory Sheets, gain of 6 yards. 14 for 24 164 Yards 1TD 27)WOAH. 11 yard opposite hash FROZEN ROPE to Zeiglar on the sideline out route. That’s a pass that will scare DBs. 15 for 25 175 Yards 1TD 28)UM…WOW. Pressure in his face and he delivers a STRIKE to Spurlock for a 35 yard gain. Just…WOW. Completely composed, super accurate. NICE. Sheets scores 2 plays later. 16 for 26 210 Yards 1TD Chargers Game: 29)Early pressure, throws pass away. 16 for 27 210 Yards 1TD 30)9 yard completion to Josh Morgan on 3rd down. Davis seems very calm and poised back there. 17 for 28 219 Yards 1TD 31)Deep Pass to Delanie Walker overthrown. It doesn’t look like he was open anyway. I’m noticing that he was having trouble on the deep pass. He’s overthrowing them. This was a bad pass. 17 for 29 219 Yards 1TD 32)6 Yard Screen to Glen Coffee. 18 for 30 225 Yards 1TD 33)Pass to Brit Miller for a 1 yard loss. 19 for 31 224 Yards 1TD 34)4 yard pass to Spurlock. 20 for 32 228 Yards 1TD 35)Quick 1 yard out to Zieglar. OUCH…looks painful for Zeiglar. 21 for 33 229 Yards 1TD 36)Nate misses on a screen to Streets. Bad pass. 21 for 34 229 Yards 1TD 37)Nate feels pressure, scrambles and hits Michael Robinson for 4 yards. Unfortunately it was 3rd and 24. 22 for 35 233 Yards 1TD 38)Two-Minute Drill: NICE 12 yard sideline route to Jason Hill. Nate showing off his arm and accuracy here. 23 for 36 245 Yards 1TD 39)13 yard pass to Spurlock. Nice throw. 24 for 37 258 Yards 1TD 40)33 yard completion to Price down the sideline. The pass was actually underthrown and price made a good move to get to the ball. Not a great throw. 25 for 38 291 Yards 1TD 41)Pressured and thrown away. 25 for 39 291 Yards 1TD 42)GREAT PLAY. Nate stands tall in the pocket, looks completely calm, and hits Jason Hill for 21 yards in the endzone. I can’t get over how composed he looks in the pocket. He even had a defender rushing up the middle and he calmly delivered the ball on target. 26 for 40 312 Yards 2TD 43)Incomplete pass to Streets on a screen. He seems to be having a little trouble with screens. 26 for 41 312 Yards 2TD 44)Designed rollout, nothing there, wisely throws it away. 26 for 42 312 Yards 2TD 45)Nate sets up and makes a good sideline pass…it’s just too bad the receiver decides to stop running and the pass is nearly intercepted. 26 for 43 312 Yards 2TD 46)Bad throw. Nate doesn’t see the safety over the middle and nearly has one picked off. 26 for 44 312 Yards 2TD 47)Two-Minute Drill: Completion to the FB for 7 yards. 27 for 45 319 Yards 2TD 48)Deep pass to Jason Hill. Can’t tell if it was on target or not because Hill was mugged. It looks like it may have been underthrown tho. Pass Interference. 27 for 45 319 Yards 2TD 49)Under pressure Davis dumps it to sheets right in front of him for no gain. 28 for 46 319 Yards 2TD 50)7 yards to Bear Pascoe. 29 for 47 326 Yards 2TD 51)Davis’ final pass. Not a bad pass, but JUST underthrown to the FB and then a freak bounce made it an INT. 29 for 48 326 Yards 2TD 1INT Final Pre-Season Stats (not accounting for Sacks): 29 for 48 326 Yards 2TD 1INT So my opinion of Davis after re-watching all of his throws is pretty much what my initial opinion was. He’s young and makes some mistakes, but there is a lot there to like. Bad: He makes some rookie mistakes, has a problem completing screen passes for some reason (I dunno how many he ran at Ball St.) and his deep sideline ball needs some work. He’s not very quick on his feet and he does lack ideal height. Good: WOW he has an arm. The ball just seems to LEAP out of his hand. He also seems to be pinpoint accurate (I didn’t see a single high throw and he leads the receivers well), he is VERY calm and collected in the pocket, he stands tall (at least as tall as he can) with his feet planted, is able to sidestep the rush and deliver the ball, and he doesn’t seem to be fazed AT ALL by the pass rush around him. In fact some of his best throws came with pressure right in his face. I’ve never been a guy who thought that a rocket arm was necessary to succeed in the NFL (Neither Montana or Young had one), but after seeing Nate hit those 10-15 yard out patterns…I’m impressed. He also seems to have a very quick release. Nate also seems to be at his best in the 2 minute drill and in the shotgun…no doubt because of the offense he ran in college. Bottom line, it’s just preseason, but I REALLY like what I see. [ Edited by Marvin49 on Sep 14, 2009 at 17:18:41 ]

You probably won't even know this guys name in 3 years. Because he can make a pass outside the 10 yard box unlike Hill and Smith he looks awesome. He's a very pedestrian guy on 31 other teams. Our QB situation just outright sucks.

He completely sucks. He is a very limited stop gap guy. He can't make ALL THE NFL THROWS by a long shot. He is the weakest wet noodle armed QB in the league. And we have a absolute bust former #1 overall pick behind him. We have nothing at QB. We need a QB.

Shaun Hill wins by handing the ball to Frank Gore. And letting the Defense play well. Which it has done. Defensively we are a better team than a few years ago and that is how we are getting this done. It's not Shaun Hill.

I think you're underestimating Shaun Hill. He's better than you think.

Plus, I don't know how you can make any sort of statement on Nate Davis. He's never played in the regular season. From what the video shows....he's accurate, very strong arm, mobile, smart decisions....

So, Nate Davis-Mania is reaching a all-time high and people are throwing out all types of claims without any proof. So, thanks to the magic of Youtube (shout out to Marvin49 for the video) here is a conclusive look at every throw Nate Davis made this past preseason, please draw your own conclusions based on the actual performance.

Well how is he to beat out shaun hill if hill was the starter? So your point is invalided. now if you would have said can't even beat out alex smith who was the second string qb then you may have been right. I think he showed enough against guys trying to make there teams that he's worth keeping around and grooming for the future. kid has a big arm and seems to have a natural feel for the game. but im not about to give up on smith to try the nate davis experiment out just yet.

I agree about Morgan, but not Nate. He shows promise, but is he ready to step in? Not likely, especially since Sing had him playing receiver during practices. You could interpret that in different ways as well. I think he showed enough arm strength, accuracy and poise under pressure, not to mention pocket sense, that he deserves some grooming and some playing time next camp and preseason. Is too much being made of him at this stage by SOME on this board? I'd have to say yes.

You mean he's moving in the pocket to create more time and throwing his receivers open like the QBs on the saints and colts

As opposed to running right and waiting for guys to uncover
