What was it? Five drops for 52 receptions?

Just becasue people got wowed by his combine numbers doesn't mean it's his fault he has not lived up to these colossal predictions that he will "revolutionize" the TE position. I think you have to seperate the man from the hype.
The guy is one of the hardest workers on the team and although he lets his emotions get the best of him too much, he's a good teamate and wants to win. If he can get 700 yards, 5-6 touchdowns with a few gamebreaking plays and a few boneheaded plays to go along with his very good blocking I think that makes him a very good players and I think we would all be very satisfied with him.
It was a bad pick and Heloti Ngata would've been a much better pick, but if he does this and becomes a solid 2nd tier recieving tight end I think you should tone down the VD hate.
I acknowledge this! Believe me I do. I don't think 700 yards 5-6 TD's will do much to sway me. That's what I predicted his best season would be for us from jump street. I also only expected him to have AT BEST 2 big plays a year. I don't see him doing better than this.
As for toning down the hate. I have a hunch i'll be defending my stance for as long as he's a 9er. Right, wrong or indifferent.
lets all forget about stats for a second.... if he has a large part in helping us win games (as far as almost every game).... be it drawing coverage to help Gore get some much needed yards to ice the game, drawing coverage for Bruce or the other WRs to make game breaking catches, staying in to block the most dangerous pass rusher on a key 3rd and 10 (with a LB & Safety focused on him thinking he might go out for a pass), using his size and speed to make key blocks down field (like T.O. does), and making game important TD catches over the middle of the field (like the Arizona game)......if he does all this and only gets 700 yards receiving IMO he was VERY MUCH worth the 6th over all pick and more.
so lets see how the season plays out and if he steps up to his potential.

Reading through this thread, someone would think Davis had just been cut because he was just terrible and everyone is giving the postmortem about why he was as bad he was.
Davis looked pretty good his rookie year and the last 2 we've seen two OC's who had no idea how to use him (Hostler) or desire to (Fartz), and a line that has given up 55 sacks in consecutive seasons. He has made some awesome plays, and his drops are blown out of proportion. I mean his very first catch in the NFL was a 30 yard TD against the Cards.
If you're only being thrown to 3 times a game, it's not your fault your production isn't what was expected of you.

Davis was improperly used. Raye will get him on track. Fact is people make a big deal about his drops because it was at crucial time. Once again he was not in the top 5 for dropped passes in a season.
TE screen and middle TE screens is what needed for him to be successful. Remember Frank Wycheck. The Titans used those plays and him as a decoy to pass to him off a block. Davis will be great.

Its about damn time. We've been clamoring for this since when...uhhh....April 2006. Every sunday in that chat room all you'd read is..."WHY THE FK IS VERNON ONLY BLOCKING THE ENTIRE HALF!" Hahaha...oh man...classic. 2006...back when Sammie Davis was our "star CB" and Mike Adams didnt want "back up money."

This is part of the problem. You are giving him waaaay too much credit for things ALL TE'S DO. As in run seam routes to draw the safety for underneath patterns. block on 3rd downs. block in the running game. He is not the only TE that does this. It's every TE's job to do it.

Well, again, I think the idea was that he would be a player who would do things most TE's COULDN'T do. I think that's what they had in mind - a player who does what all TE's do and then adds wide-receiver-like speed to the mix. And since he was the fastest tight end ever measured at the combine, I don't see why it was so wrong to have those expectations. And, yes, I fully understand speed is not the main thing. But, for the TE position it could be a factor which could lead to game-breaking plays now and then. You say two per season. I don't know. In his first game, he caught a 10-yard crossing pattern and then stunned the entire Cards secondary by outracing all of them to the endzone. I think a seasoned coach like Raye will find ways to make that happen more often and I'm looking forward to watching for it.

Serious question for Kizray - as the board's most vocal critic of Vernon Davis, what will it take for you to get off his back? What kind of a season would Davis have to have to make you glad he's the #1 TE on the team?
1st question:
It actually has nothing to do with what numbers he puts up.

I wonder what other comments we can expect from the players that will help 16 teams prepare to play us this year.

As I have been saying all along,VD will have a great year with Jimmy Raye as the OC !
VD was second on the team in receptions (52) in his second year (right on track to be one of the greats) but then they brought in Martz who ignored him in 2008. Now Raye will have him right back on track in 2009 to be the great TE he was becoming in 2007 ! And not only that but he has slimmed down and stopped the OVER weight training he was doing ,so he will be more agile now and be able to not be so stiff and should be a better receiver, not only the best blocking TE in the NFL,like he has already been for 2 years now.
Let's see now...
- He IS the best blocking TE in the entire NFL,without question !
- He IS the fastest and quickest TE in the entire NFL,without question !
- He now has an OC that is famous for throwing to TE's and making them stars !
- He is much more mature now and is also more agile and a better route runner than ever, with years of productive NFL experience under his belt and a HC who will be sure he thinks of team first !
- OH,I forgot,,his negative side...he drops a ball at the wrong time ,just every once in a while (sort of like T.O. or Jerry Rice in his first year, but not as many as people exaggerate that he does.
WOW,I guess that overrides all those other GREAT qualities that could easily make him a Pro Bowl TE,(LOL).
I guess we should cut him right away ,LOL

OH yeah,we should also cut Gore because he fumbles every once in a while and I think we should cut Willis because I am sure I saw him miss a couple of tackles last season and don't forget those couple of missed FG's and those few bad punts, there go Andy Lee and Joe Nedney.
What a joke to be so down on VD ,because he drops a ball every now and then. He is a great weapon and with Raye using him properly he SHOULD be the best TE we have had in a decade and one of the premirer TE's in the NFL.
If he doesn't perform as well as I think and up to his potential, then he will only be in the top 5 in the NFL,what a disaster ! ,lol
