It's especially strange and short-sighted to not believe a player can change when he's surrounded by state-of-the-art training facilities and personnel. Add to that the immense monetary incentives - of course these players can get better.

The depth of thought and reasoning displayed in this post is why you are such a respected member of the zone...keep up the great work!

Maybe we should give them all starting QB position for professional sport teams. Good lord, the only thing alex has ever won so far is a P.R. war.
I can't wait to see him rescue some blind orphans from a burning building (that should be enough for him to secure the starting QB position - shouldn't it?) - God knows he can't rescue a franchise... It doesn't make you a "good" person to live through a tragedy it makes you "a" person who lived through a tragedy !!!
This underdog angle that the media is pushing (which works on the dumbest of you everytime) is insulting and contrary to any sense of reality. I DON'T CARE IF ALEX IS A GOOD PERSON!!! With 50 million he should be - without 50 million he should be - with tragedy and without,,, He should be!!! He is trying to be a football player not a motivational griever. He sucks at football and every off season we get these fairy tales about how he looks like "the guy" and then he fails completely (and all we get from the authors of these fairy tales are more alexcuses to propagate for the sake of access). Once Smith is gone watch how the stories from the access whores will start to become more and more critical and reality based... The court of public opinion is stupid and so are its jurors.
Happy independence from thought weekend

BRAVO!!
Perpetual "alexcuses" and feeling bad for the poor "underdog" is why the Smith supporters think the rest of us should support him. Personally, I was over him before the start of last season and hope that Hill not only wins the qb competition (which shouldn't be too difficult) but does so convincingly so there's no question afterward and we can stop beating this dead horse once and for all.

But wait.....
He has all the physical tools and potential to succeed

It's Nolan fault that he cant throw accurate and sustain a drive

This is his fifth Offensive Coordinator

He never had any talent at receiver, even though he had Antonio Bryant who is a franchise player now

He is a good guy give him a chance

I wonder what the excuse will be this season when he is on the bench. Might as well name them now:
Coaching staff did not cater the offense to his needs

They did not give him enough reps in practice

He NEEDS A FULL YEAR to grasp an offense

They did not give him enough playing time in Pre-Season

I'm sure the Alex Leaf Lovers will provide more excuses for him. This guy is a bust. The 49ers need to go into the season with people who will contribute and not hurt the team. Hill, Huard, and Davis is who I would go with this season. Cut the Bust

Everyone is on the line at that point...including Scott. I just dont see that happening just yet. Im rooting for Smith to succeed but I dont think him starting day 1 is what is best for the team.
Let Hill start. If he starts 1-3 or 2-4 or something along those lines...try Alex out.
makes the most sense. hill should get the first crack at it. but alex better be ready, because it my take a few games for the o line to gel and it could start out dicey.

And then he ends his diatribe with "Happy independence from thought day!" How precious. What a great thinker! Just one problem. The above is one of the stupidest things I'll see all day. "With 50 million he should be..." ??!! Who says, dirty? Your fairy god mother? Did $50 million make Michael Vick a "good person?" How about Bernie Madoff - he was worth billions - he should have been a reeeaaaaal good person, right dirty?
Here's a lesson in life that some of us here evidently need: having money doesn't necessarily make you a good person. I would have thought this was obvious, but I guess it's not.

I'm wondering at what point posters believe Singletary should make his choice at QB. I'm saying after the 2nd preseason game, before the 3rd.

The first two are at home. The third game is at the Cowboys. He may want to see both in that hostile environment before he decides.

I see your point, but I think the decision should be made after the 2nd preseason game vs. the Raiders on August 22. That would essentially be the halfway point of training camp. The team would then have the remainder of training camp to establish the rhythm and timing needed to have a successful offense, that which they couldn't do by alternating snaps for each QB.
