Nolan and Scott did that for 3+ years.....NEVER brought in TRUE competition for Alex....and traded away the only QB who ever beat out Alex..... but your right, Nolan should have been Fired a long time ago by risking his job like that......as well as Scott.....who is still with the team and hoping and praying and that Alex pans out.....even if it means holding a roster spot which could go to a QB who would be a great Backup for our Starting QB.....and be there ready, if we need him to win a crucial late season game (if Shaun Hill gets hurt) for us....

don't worry, IMO, everyone here will witness it live during the preseason.....someone is going to out play someone else.....but the one who doesn't deserve the roster spot will still be here with the team.

You should be laughing at your own absurdity and ignorance of reality. You think you have it figured out,but you are just spouting nonsense. There is no effing way that these guys pulling down the big bucks are gonna risk their jobs just on a QB that couldn't get the job done. You guys are getting ridiculous with all your conspiracy theories,so let me break it down for you....

The quarterback competition is for real,Smith will have to outplay Hill to get his job back. There is absolutely no advantage to it being a fix as you claim. It makes no sense for them to have a competition if the decision has already been made.I do not see how you even come up with this silly notion,it is laughable to think that there is any kind of reason to handle the situation like that.If the starter was already established why not let him take all the first team snaps to get more time with the other starters?See...your "theory" makes absolutely no sense at all.You are just another factional hater/lover types that cannot get past your prejudice towards a player on your own effing team to see that competition makes everyone involved work harder and get better. You should hope that one of these guys pushes the other to elevate his game to the next level and become a legit starter for our team, because as of right now,we do not have a proven one.

I have been paying attention to what has been happening to my team these past 4 years.....have you? If you sit there and tell me that by bringing/keeping in players like Ken Dorsey, Trent Dilfer, Chris Wienke dinkie do, etc all these QBs....you're telling me that these decisions were what were best for our TEAM? or were these decision what was best for our decision makers, trying to make sure that their draft pick panned out....at ALL COST, even if it meant losing their Jobs (ex. Nolan)

baring injury, Hill will be the starter....and it looks like they want Alex to be the backup......preseason will show if they are looking out for the team's best interest or their own.

Nolan cost Nolan his own job by not fixing the offensive line in the time he was here, also the Martz hiring and his handling of the whole Smith injury situation. They stuck with Smith because there was no one better on the roster.

AGAIN, YOU ARE AVOIDING WHY THIS WAS THE CASE. Why wasn't there someone else brought in that could push Alex during that 3 year span....what was the reason for trading Rattay after 3.5 games into the season in Alex's first season.... Rattay had more TDs in those 3 games than all of our QBs combined the rest of the year.

as for the rest of your post....I don't hate Alex....the money was given to him....he was available to be drafted......as far as other people hating on him....well again that comes with the money.....he accepted his role and his contract....he chose to come out of a spread offense in College, after 2 years...... he chose this.....I think there are more players in the NFL to feel sorry for before Alex, for more reasonable reasons......if that makes sense.

Nolan is stupid would be my guess. As for Rattay,he was as bad as JTO at throwing games away, but since the season was gonna be a loss anyways,I agree that he should have been in there taking the pounding.2005 was going to be a nightmare anyways.I have been watching the niners since 1980,and 2005 was the worst team I have ever seen them field.I guarantee you that no matter what QB we had that year he was gonna struggle with the crappy talent(dare I even use the word?) on that roster.I do not feel sorry for Smith,he is a multi millionaire with a super hot wife and is 13 years younger than I am,why would I feel sorry for him?Even though he got a raw deal from that ass hat Mike Nolan,he was well compensated.I feel sorry for the posters here that have let themselves buy into the looser mentality,I feel sorry for them because I know firsthand the exultation of seeing the team you love winning the big game, and even through the hard times i have that.I hope we can get better soon some some of these bitter people can have something besides misery to feel about the team they love.Misery like that can poison the soul, and we don't want anyone to go postal now do we?

What ya say is true but for every fan who turns south, ya get a fan such as conejo (sp) read he became a niner fan 6 yrs ago and is a diehard. Well with a losing team all those yrs he has been here, and it will make it hat much more exciting for him as well as the rest of us. I can never get use to these losing seasons. Each one leaves its own mark on the off season. But the sign of hope is always there for the new yr. Except this yr feels a lot different then the last few yrs. Our team now looks to have structure and a drive to win. Not that I didn't believe this before. But it is more evident now. Just wish walt wasn't sitting on ir, but then we wouldn't have bly neither.

The most polarizing in "Niner team lore" : No

The most polarizing in "Webzone lore" : possibly.......

Remember that "Webzone," not to mention the internet as an entity, has only been around for a short time. Our 49'ers last Lombardi trophy was won pre-internet.

Also remember that many (most, I would guess) "Webzone" people were teenagers or younger in 1995, when Steve, Jerry, & Ricky were walking all over the chargers and setting Superbowl records.

Agreed. Anyone who can say Smith is the most polarising player needs to google Haley or Romanowski. Just for starters.
Kaplan writes the perfect scenario/mentality fans need to think about and why Shaun should start:

Quote:
Okay, so what to do? The solution seems obvious, and until a few weeks ago it seemed that we were headed straight for it. Start over. Pretend that Smith, still only 25, is again the hot rookie. And while he learns, give the job to the gritty veteran. But this time, the gritty veteran will be played not by Tim Rattay, who'd proved nothing, but by Hill, who's proven so much more. The best of both worlds, see? If Hill succeeds, then we'll win, and Smith can take over later, when Hill declines. If Hill fails, then we'll lose, and Smith can take over sooner, but only when he's ready to succeed. Perfect.

In his 4th game, Smith did what all Alexcusers wanted to see him do, which was to just let the ball go and he did and he sucked...royally.

I still have yet to see Smith consistently release the ball before a receiver is open.

This was last year, right? That's when he had his lingering injury, right?

How can one properly and correctly evaluate an athlete when he's injured?

AND

Here's a vid for you so you can see for yourself that he can lead his WRs...not all the time, but he does do it consistently...maybe 85% of the time.

You can't.

BUT...I've seen him when he was healthy, and very rarely saw anything I would call "great".

Hopefully I'm wrong, though. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong by Alex coming out and playing amazing. And who knows, I'm wrong a lot.

But as of right now, injury or not, Alex hasn't played as well as Hill has. Hill shouldn't lose his job simply based on Alex's potential.

Hey Apples, it wasn't about calling Alex great. The point I am making is that Alex was accurate and would lead his man especially on the run. I just don't know how you guys don't see that. I wish I had access to film especially the Rams game in 07 at the Rams...he was great in that game throwing on the run.

He's even displayed it now in OTAs and Minis to the point that all of the beat writers commented on it.

I agree that Hill has the better record and shouldn't lose his job just based on potential and I wasn't alluding to that fact. Instead, I will go with what I have said in the past: He has to earn it.

I am just arguing the point that Alex is not accurate and can't lead his WRs.

I completely disagree based on my own eye witness accounts of Alex being able to do just that...accurately throw especially on the run. I don't know anyone who could do that with the extent of his injury.

We finally get Alex healthy and it is now his time to make it happen period. I wish him the best of luck.

PS We drafted a WR.

I know . And we still have the same question marks as we did before the draft: pass rush, OT, DL. Frustrating...

I did buy his jersey though .

Not to jump in your conversation. But Alex is far from accurate. That and his pocket presence I think is has been his biggest flaws. Which you really can't learn while watching.

For some crazy reason. I actually have a feeling he's going to win the starting job and play decent. Not pro bowl caliber, but decent. Despite what his innaccuracies. I think he has the receivers now that can overcome innaccurate passes. Ala Brandon Lloyd for Rattay.

I have the same feeling and it's unsettling because even though I like Alex Smith, I feel more comfortable with Shaun Hill in there at this point. But yes, either of the QB's are going to have a much better receiving corps this year and that should help a lot.

For some crazy reason, players get better the longer they don't play.
I find it really hard to believe that Alex will start (day 1 at least). It would create such a huge amount of pressure NOT just for Alex, but for the coaching staff too. Everyone is on the line at that point...including Scott. I just dont see that happening just yet. Im rooting for Smith to succeed but I dont think him starting day 1 is what is best for the team.

Let Hill start. If he starts 1-3 or 2-4 or something along those lines...try Alex out.

Sometimes players get better when they are healthier and have a better supporting cast around them.
