I have the same feeling and it's unsettling because even though I like Alex Smith, I feel more comfortable with Shaun Hill in there at this point. But yes, either of the QB's are going to have a much better receiving corps this year and that should help a lot.

For some crazy reason, players get better the longer they don't play.

Sometimes players get better when they are healthier and have a better supporting cast around them.

This is true! But sometimes a particular player just isn't that good or talented. On that note this aint a reference to no players on the niners roster

JTO was still getting ripped for his WTF preseason but don't forget Smith's 4th preseason game.

In his 4th game, Smith did what all Alexcusers wanted to see him do, which was to just let the ball go and he did and he sucked...royally.

I still have yet to see Smith consistently release the ball before a receiver is open.

This was last year, right? That's when he had his lingering injury, right?

How can one properly and correctly evaluate an athlete when he's injured?

You can't.

BUT...I've seen him when he was healthy, and very rarely saw anything I would call "great".

Hopefully I'm wrong, though. I'd love nothing more than to be proven wrong by Alex coming out and playing amazing. And who knows, I'm wrong a lot.

But as of right now, injury or not, Alex hasn't played as well as Hill has. Hill shouldn't lose his job simply based on Alex's potential.

Hey Apples, it wasn't about calling Alex great. The point I am making is that Alex was accurate and would lead his man especially on the run. I just don't know how you guys don't see that. I wish I had access to film especially the Rams game in 07 at the Rams...he was great in that game throwing on the run.

He's even displayed it now in OTAs and Minis to the point that all of the beat writers commented on it.

I agree that Hill has the better record and shouldn't lose his job just based on potential and I wasn't alluding to that fact. Instead, I will go with what I have said in the past: He has to earn it.

I am just arguing the point that Alex is not accurate and can't lead his WRs.

I completely disagree based on my own eye witness accounts of Alex being able to do just that...accurately throw especially on the run. I don't know anyone who could do that with the extent of his injury.

We finally get Alex healthy and it is now his time to make it happen period. I wish him the best of luck.

PS We drafted a WR.

Not to jump in your conversation. But Alex is far from accurate. That and his pocket presence I think is has been his biggest flaws. Which you really can't learn while watching.

But you did jump into the conversation and there are many posts, articles, comments from beat writers to coaches to players who all agree with me...he's accurate.

I don't want to hash out an argument over something already argued infinitely. I don't agree based on the assertions of those professionals within the game who coached or played with him. I also don't agree based on what I saw clearly.

Hey, you got your fan-based opinion and are entitled to it. I just follow the pros opinions and my own eyes on this one.

Yet another thing to take into account is on how many of those plays in that video he is scrambling for his life because the line was collapsing. As for why some guys just cannot give Smith any credit for what he does do well,I am of the opinion that 85% of them are Cal Bear fans that wanted Rodgers,7% were people whose teams got trounced in college by Smith's Utes,7% are delusional and actually think that he has played enough with enough talent around him to have hit his proverbial ceiling, and the last 1% are just trolls from other teams posting on this site.

Another thing he does well, indeed.

We do have a better OL now, but he knows how and when to run just in case. He can beat you with his legs as well as his arm. I do believe that no matter what it really is in Alex's hands. If he continues to progress as he has in TC, then he will beat out Hill, IMO.

Either way, I am pulling for both of them!

Same here my friend,I want the best player to win,I do not care what name or number is on his jersey, just that it is red and gold.I just get tired of these ignorant trolls that try to lump Smith in what that a*****e Ryan Leaf. They couldn't really be that stupid so I imagine they are just doing it to create drama...hence they are trolls.

I have a feeling Alex will be starting at some point, if not right out of training camp. He's finally healthy, has more confidence, and seems determined to prove his doubters wrong. I think this style of offense might actually give Alex an advantage over Shaun Hill. The scheme will share a lot of similarities to Norv Turner's offense in which Alex excelled in 2006! In addition, I think QB Coach Mike Johnson will play a big part in either QB's success.

Quote:
Prior to joining Baltimore, Johnson spent three years as the quarterbacks coach with the Atlanta Falcons, tutoring three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Michael Vick. Vick put up 2,412 passing yards and 15 touchdowns, while ranking second on the team with 597 rushing yards and six touchdowns. In 2004, Vick became the first NFL quarterback to throw for more than 250 yards and run for more than 100 yards in a single game (at Denver, 10-31-2004). In 2003, Interim Head Coach Wade Phillips asked Johnson to call the Falcons offensive plays for the final two games of the season. In those two contests, Vick compiled his second-highest quarterback rankings of the year (119.2 at Tampa Bay, 12-20-03, and 93.0 vs. Jacksonville, 12-28-03). In 2002, Johnson guided a young receiving corps that included WR Brian Finneran, who had the best year of his career, recording 838 yards on 56 receptions and six touchdowns.

From 2000 to 2001, Johnson served as the quarterbacks coach for the San Diego Chargers. Under Johnson’s guidance, Doug Flutie amassed career-highs with 3,464 yards passing and 294 completions in 2001. Flutie’s passing yards that season were the most for a Chargers quarterback since Dan Fouts put up 3,638 yards in 1985. During the 2001 campaign, Flutie threw for more than 300 yards on four occasions.

I just wish training camp would hurry up and get here! Lets settle this competition. I'm getting anxious!

I don't care what anybody says...ALEX SMITH IS THE BETTER QB out of the competition. I like Shaun Hill and will be secure enough to have him start, however I see the potential of Alex Smith beginning the start of his assumed great career. Yes he has been in tough situations, but mainly if you look at the way he is playing and if you look at the way he played when he was protected and the way he can scramble and throw on target and with velocity, that is an untouchable difference between the two. As he develops, he would be the only to take us to the big game, shaun hill is a game manager, not a big time QB to make it to the big game, so to break the news and make people cry.
im still ganna haft to side with Hill
All this media love toward Alex Smith is gonna make me effn puke. Talk about influencing the sheep!!! Hell I know guys that knew guys that killed themselves let's make "them" the freakin' president of the world,,, why don't we?!? Perhaps a parade?!? Maybe we should give them all starting QB position for professional sport teams. Good lord, the only thing alex has ever won so far is a P.R. war.

I can't wait to see him rescue some blind orphans from a burning building (that should be enough for him to secure the starting QB position - shouldn't it?) - God knows he can't rescue a franchise... It doesn't make you a "good" person to live through a tragedy it makes you "a" person who lived through a tragedy !!!

This underdog angle that the media is pushing (which works on the dumbest of you everytime) is insulting and contrary to any sense of reality. I DON'T CARE IF ALEX IS A GOOD PERSON!!! With 50 million he should be - without 50 million he should be - with tragedy and without,,, He should be!!! He is trying to be a football player not a motivational griever. He sucks at football and every off season we get these fairy tales about how he looks like "the guy" and then he fails completely (and all we get from the authors of these fairy tales are more alexcuses to propagate for the sake of access). Once Smith is gone watch how the stories from the access whores will start to become more and more critical and reality based... The court of public opinion is stupid and so are its jurors.

LOL chill out. Im sure you'd be singing the opposite tune if all the articles were about Shaun.

That being said, I think coaches who are paid millions of dollars and know what they are doing unlike most of us...will make the right decision. YOu really think they will say, "wow, check this guy out...this generations Jack Kemp...START HIM!"

Cmon man.

Sometimes its just hard to tell when people are kidding on here.
What I will never understand is how some of you guys think that players never improve, they get one year and if they are not pro bowlers, then they are busts. You can call not having an offensive line worth a flip an excuse for Smith not lighting up the world, but the fact is that it is a reason, and in case you don't know, those are two different things.I do not care who starts at QB as long as it is the one who won the competition, but you guys that think Hill has earned the starting spot are obviously wrong,or he would be the starter already.I just do not get how you think you are smarter than the coaches or even the players themselves.Look at it this way,if Hill is the better QB,he will easily win the starting job,he has the advantage going into training camp according to the powers that be.Smith will have to clearly outplay Hill to get his job back.If he does then he will be the better quarterback, and the team will be better off because he undoubtedly has the better tools to be a pro quarterback.I am just sick and tired of seeing you asses bashing guys that play for our team, especially ones that chose to stay here because they love being a niner, even after the way the organization (mainly Nolan)threw them under the bus.I think some of you guys need to take a cue from Smith and learn a little something about loyalty to your team.If he isn't the better QB,then you have nothing to worry about. That is unless you are foolish enough to think that Singletary would risk his first big break at coaching just to let Smith play over Hill even if Hill is the better option. My opinion on the matter is just this...May the best QB win...whatever his name is.
