I mean, even if you ignore our consistent history of injuries at the QB position, Sam has been desperate to find a quality offensive scheme since he entered the league. He's been on podcasts raving about our organization before he got here.

Also, maybe his intel said there's a chance he could start, but does that automatically mean that Kyle and John told him he would? Or would be QB2 even?

That's not really the argument is it? It's not 'wanting to be here instead of securing a starting position'. It's wanting to be here to be QB3 with no chance to play barring injuries, following arguably the best stretch of games in his career, at a point in his career where he has maybe one more opportunity to become a starting player going forward. And this is decided by Day 1 of free agency.

It's not reasonable. It doesn't make sense from his perspective. It doesn't square with the contract we gave him. It doesn't square with the fact that he's going to be in a competition with another guy for a better role.

Does it matter that we have an awesome team and QB friendly scheme? Yes. That's why he's here, in addition to the fact that he's going to have an opportunity to play himself into a better position and more money.

I don't have the time nor the inclination to go further back, but there are plenty of posts like this. They may not like Trey more than the Niners, but some people prioritize being "right," over their fandom of the team. And their posts reflect that, so it's natural that people view them as being more of a fan of Trey than the Niners. Let's not act like this is some crazy thought.

I remember that.

Some were gleeful when we lost to the Rams because they thought it was the end of that QB. Only for 2022 to happen. Oops…

also, there was a poster openly hoping for Purdy to be injured until week 8 to give Lance a shot. If that ain't putting Lance above the rest of the team then I don't know what is.

Who?

Take a look at the Jimmy and NFCCG thread.

some know who I'm talking about. I'll just leave it at that.

It doesn't ultimately matter what I think. I just don't see the evidence that signing Sam automatically means the team is down on Trey. To me, the signing was about injuries, the new rule change, and the fact that Trey is such an unknown. Which isn't the same thing as you're suggesting.

At the same time I'm not claiming to be more right than you… I'm arguing that it's unknowable.

Which is the general stance I've had about Trey all along.

I've argued against people saying starting Trey his rookie season would have resulted in missing the playoffs, not because I know he would have made the playoffs, but that there's not enough date to prove either opinion.

Is saying the team signed Sam to compete with Trey in order to give us a better chance at having a quality QB2 really that different from saying Trey is unknown? To expand, I definitely disagree that we have no idea what Trey has been to this point, and I fully believe two full years with the team is going to give the team a good idea what they have regardless of regular season time, but I also acknowledge that we don't know what, if any, improvements Trey will have made by the start of the season. The team made a move to give them flexibility in an unknown situation (Purdy's health, Trey's ability). Trey could simply beat Sam out for the job going forward. It's something the team couldn't know in advance and they're protecting themselves. It's not complicated and it was easy to see coming.

I totally understand your hesitation to derive conclusions from limited data. What I don't understand is a willingness to disregard evidence completely, even if it might not give a full picture, especially when you did in fact form your own opinion that proved incorrect. It's time to reevaluate in that case, not make the case that something is unknowable.

What is the evidence in disregarding? That Sam and Trey are competing? Does competition say anything about a players competency?

I'm saying we don't know… as in the fans, I would say it's fair to assume the 49ers know more about where Trey was his rookie season, last season, and now this offseason, even without a lot of game film.

But, for example, I've seen a lot of posters claim to know Trey has been awful in practice. When all the reports I've seen were that he was inconsistent. Is inconsistent the same as awful? I'd argue no… but again, we're basing off reports. How can I know if someone is wrong when they claim this? Other than I know they don't have access to practices themselves? I don't. And I'd argue no one does.

There were a couple of reporters Trey's rookie season that said he looked better than Jimmy, and Jimmy took us to the NFC championship after an offseason where he threw 5 straight interceptions in one practice… do you see where my hesitation comes from for making conclusions about players on practice?

I've been incredibly consistent about this from the beginning. While others were making positive or negative predictions about Trey, I only said I liked his skill set and wanted the 49ers to draft him, but I reserved the right to wait and be patient. Which is the opposite of 85% of the posters here.

I never assumed he would be instantly better than Jimmy, or that Purdy will be better than Jimmy. I think Purdy has played better than any QB we've had under Kyle, but there's still question marks for both QBs.

You mean his countdown to Jimmy being gone in the offseason? What does that have to do with someone supposedly happy we lost to the Rams or someone actually saying they wish Purdy stays injured?

When I'm talking about evidence you once analyzed yourself and are now disregarding, I'm referencing your confidence in betting against the idea that Sam was here to compete.

You offered that bet in argument against people who were saying the evidence was pointing to a lack of confidence in Trey's reliability short term and that the team was making moves to give them flexibility in the event their starter wasn't able to go. I'm wondering if you're willing to reevaluate now that we have an answer. It doesn't seem like it. Did the other side of that argument just get lucky in an unknowable situation? Absolutely not.

FWIW I don't give a s**t about practice reports, player comments, or especially comments from local media including the low end guys like Grant Cohn etc… at least to the extent that I'd accept them without corroborating evidence. It wasn't hard to believe reports that Trey had an up and down camp and struggled not because it was said by x or y, but because it was consistent with the team's actions and his play on the field that we actually saw.

Take right now for example and the growing stream of comments from beat writers and select players that say the team has never been more confident in Trey and that Trey has significantly improved. Is that true? Could be. Is it a company line in order to shine up an asset? Could be. When will we have more information? When we see it on the field, or when the team makes a roster move or sets a depth chart etc. For me, for now, it's just noise.
