Just like Trey people see the phyiscal attributes and fall in love with it. I'm not a physical attribute kind of guy. Vernon struggled with catching and separting coming out of college and both of those things are kind of important to be revolutionizer of the position. As it stands IMO. Most of Vernon's big plays were scheme plays where he was schemed open and made big plays. Kudo for him for taking advantage of it but to me he was nothing special

Pretty sure his brain was equal too or greater reason as to why shanahan was so high on him than his pure physical ability tho that was likely a high 1B. If it was pure physical ability fields would be a niner. Shannahan saw the combination plus maturity and work ethic. Gotta put it all together now.

Glad you're not the decision maker. I could
see Mac at 12 but NOT at 3!

Not just that but we know no team in the league valued him higher than 15 so trading 12, 2 1s and a 3 for a guy you could've sat there and taken would've been one of the biggest draft trade blunders in NFL history.

Actually we don't know that if the Niners would've stood pat Jones would've been there at 12 it's very possible that a team(Patriots) could've jumped them to take Jones now I wouldn't have moved to three for either guy but I could see a small trade up being necessary if Jones was yor guy.

Then why didn't the Pats move up to 8 or so to make sure he didn't go to Denver. Seems they were fine with risking it. Bears moved up to secure Fields.

Because they obviously didn't view Denver or any other team in that area as a threat to take Jones but if the 49ers who had been strongly linked to Jones had been sitting at 12 that would've changed everything in my opinion.

Or they were fine with standing still and getting a guy where they valued him. If someone else reached that's on them.

We do know 13 teams passed on the guy so taking that at 3 when you've dealt multiple firsts is TERRIBLE value.

That's my point they were fine standing still because the 49ers were no longer sitting at 12, No argument from me on that I think three first was terrible value for the third pick in general hopefully Lance proves me wrong.

I think the trade for immense upside at QB was fine. What bothered me however was that we goofed around when right after we lost we should have found a trading partner for Jimmy and gotten draft value going into the 2022 draft

The way I see it is we knew Trey would redshirt in 2021 so that's your first pick that would have been spent on him anyway. We had him to make 2021 a success as we redshirted Trey

2022 is the first real pick spent in excess of the 2021 selection required to get him. We will now get our first taste of Trey in his first 17 game season. This year is his introduction. Year 2023 is the second pick in excess of 2021 and this is where we get to see if we were right to select him where he should be taking his second year jump.

If we are wrong then we will have a high pick in 2024 to make it right

It really was not such a bad trade because we had Jimmy to guarantee the first year went well so now we can take a look over the next couple years. We spent three firsts to evaluate a guy three years which is normally what it entails and then if we were wrong we pick first year four

Now let us put in work and see if we nailed it this time!

You also gotta think that Miami could have been saying that why not they take Trey or Fields and if we want it so bad then pay for it and to move up there that high what we paid ain't too far fetched when we only essentially paid a two draft premium for the privilege of drafting hopefully a franchise QB and we had a free year of play from Jimmy over the three years of firsts

Goofing around after we lost? They couldn't even discuss a trade for Jimmy until March 14. He had surgery before that. Even if they had some sneaky handshake deal in place before his surgery, it would have voided the second he went under the knife.
