Mike McDaniel leaves that next season to coach the Dolphins, Trey is the starter of the 9ers. Kyle desides to use him as a battering ram, and Trey lasts a 1 game and 2 drives before he's injured for the year.
So Mike was "stuck" with him back then, as Trey was invested in. This time Mike wasn't stuck with Trey. He had a chance to bring someone else in... maybe a QB he worked with in Miami... or another former 9er QB...
But nope, he... along with Jimbo, trusts Trey to keep the Chargers season alive if Herbert gets injured. Says a lot.
Chargers season should be fun to watch with Roman not there anymore. Imo, Jimbo will keep McDaniel grounded.. will bring out the best in him.
think you might be reading a little too much into this.
Here's how it went down:
Harbs: we are 1 week into into free agency and we don't have a backup QB. No one has picked up our backup from last year. Do you want to get him since he's familiar with what we ran last year and what you want to run?
Mike: Sure
Harbs: ok lets resign him
Plus Mike McDaniel could have signed Trey Lance last year as a free agent but chose not to.
