Montana being able to prolong the play gives it an element of being out of structure. The primary on the play, on rhythm, was for Soloman. I give it to you that they practiced it. But the ability to extend the play and throw off platform, that's the type of athleticism and ability that coaches like to have from this generation of QBs.
Amazing he doesn't know that lol
Teams practice scramble drills, it's a thing. So even when mobile QBs take off and "run around", there is still some organization amidst being out of structure. Same thing with "The Catch". They rehearsed what to do if the situation arose where the primary target wasn't there and Joe would start approaching the sideline. I shouldn't have used the term "run around" because it made it seem as though the players had no idea what to do and got lucky.
It was a very poor example of what we're discussing. And you used a QB who very much embodied what I'm a proponent of, and that's solid fundamentals and passing from the pocket. Yes Joe and Steve could both move and make plays, but that is WAY different than this nonsense that Mahomes and Co. are doing today. It looks great, but is very hard to sustain for long stretches, a whole season, a Super Bowl run. If the majority of teams end up going this route, then statistically speaking yes we'll see more of it in the playoffs and Super Bowl. But it will only take one Brady/Manning type to get the right coach and they will destroy this crap. Cool highlights though.
Long story short - Trey mechanics in college >>>>>>>>>> Trey mechanics in the NFL (so far).
