I am whelmed.

Simple question: was there any rookie QB this season who had a better first start?

Off of memory, I would say Trevor and MAYBE Mac? But yeah Fields and Zach were worse I think.

Lawrence had 3 interceptions in his first game.

Right but he had 3 TD's. You win some, you lose some.

Andrew Luck threw a lot of picks but everyone agrees he was great. Why? Because he threw a lot of TD's.

Trey had an easy TD here to Mitchell. These are the type of plays where he needs to use his mobility to stress the defense with his legs but beat them with his arm. I can't count how many times Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson on these time of plays press the line of scrimmage to suck in the defenders, take a step or two back to buy an extra second and lob a pass over them for an easy TD.

This play to me was Lance thinking he can do what he did in college in the NFL. He ran over people a lot in the college and this would normally be a gimmie. Hopefully he learns that it wont work anymore.

He had the angle towards the pylon, but hes a rook learning on the fly.

I'm surprised he didn't get in on that play. Had a lot of options. Laid out simmons. that's good. But carrying the ball in the wrong hand, didnt go over, didnt pull up and loft one to mitchell. Will do better next time.

But all in all, he looked okay out there and showed enough positive to outweigh the negatives. Of course your mind has already been made up since he was the pick taken in the draft.

If this was Mac Jones he'd be saying the exact opposite.
I'm ultimately fine with Trey though. He showed promise, but needs to refine things. I'm eager to see how he looks in Year 2.

But to everyone who said he didn't show flashes… I disagree. That fourth down conversion to Sanu on the out route against a heavy blitz was an NFL level QB throw. He threw a very perfectly thrown ball to Aiyuk on the left side against tight coverage. He did convert a couple first downs with his legs. With him at QB, he led a 90 play drive that took off a significant amount of clock.

He showed flashes, but needs work.

Exactly how Kyle drew it up....

Didn't like the pick when it happened, showed nothing today to convince me otherwise

I guess that explains why you're rooting against him.
Things are moving way too fast for Lance, once he settles, just take the check downs when its there. He reads one and two and he takes off, not entirely his fault since the oline can block for more than 2 secs.

Because the gameplan to have production for Trey is going to really wear him down. He's just not good enough as a passer for us to have much of a different gameplan from today.

It can really wear on a QB—-The punishment David Carr took in his first couple years for the Texans destroyed him.

The game plan was good enough to win though. We out gained the # 1 yard producing offense in the game. The difference was situational football, converting on 3rd and 4th downs. But is Trey going to learn to be a better passer or situational player holding a clipboard? I don't think so. Let him take his chances.

Do you guys thinks Trey can be like Josh Allen?
Comparable size and had bad accuracy/ mechanics his first year?

Dude they they lost by 16 points to the Texans and 2 of his TDs came in garbage time while they were being blown out.

I'm deeply concerned. He doesn't read the field well, makes bad decisions, throws inaccurate passes, can't throw a spirals, doesn't run around as well as advertised. To top it off he's completely confused.

He's not worth the 100 picks they gave up. Definitely not ready.

Deeply concerned after one game of football?. That's crazy talk.

I agree with you. Trey Lance performed admirably, all things considered. He is good at avoiding the rush and extending plays that look DOA. When he scrambles he is keeping his eyes downfield, which is great thing to see from a rookie. Yeah, he looked lost trying to read the defence and go through progressions, but we knew he was inexperienced and raw.

Lance never really seemed that rattled out there. On the procedural stuff, the team didn't have trouble getting the ball off today, which is great. I love his arm strength. His processing of what the defence is doing in relation to the route progressions is a work in progress, and I think it's part of the reason some of those balls came out awkwardly from his hand.

I like the fact he has the ability to convert on 2nd and 25's, something that would never happen with JimmyG there.

you want Jimmy back because he can run the offence proper, but I'm optimistic about Lances future.
Some of you guys are ridiculous lol. What did you expect from a rookie in his first start against one of the best teams in the NFL? I think the future is bright with this kid.

I wasn't expecting a lot today but all and all he did okay. He had a passer rating of 55 but if he had one TD instead of one INT his rating is over 100. He had 2 first down throws that were dropped that would have added at least 30 yards to his numbers. He actually outplayed Murray today especially when you consider the experience level. It was at least as good or better than most of the other 1st rounders from this year had in their first game.

100% agree with this. Kid played ok

David Carr was a sitting duck who got smacked, left, right and centre

Yeah, and while Trey isn't going to be a sitting duck like Carr, he's still being exposed to a lot of hits on our designed running plays. The halftime show analysts noted it, as did Jimmie Ward. We don't want to see Trey taking his hits so early in his career.

There was a play where he could've easily just ran out of bounds, but opted to turn in and took a hit. He's still learning the balance of knowing when to put his body on the line vs protecting yourself.
