I am whelmed.

Simple question: was there any rookie QB this season who had a better first start?

Off of memory, I would say Trevor and MAYBE Mac? But yeah Fields and Zach were worse I think.

Lawrence had 3 interceptions in his first game.

Right but he had 3 TD's. You win some, you lose some.

Andrew Luck threw a lot of picks but everyone agrees he was great. Why? Because he threw a lot of TD's.

By this standard of logic Trey was terrific - he had 1TD and an INT against a far better defense.

Comparable size and had bad accuracy/ mechanics his first year?

Josh Allen's gamelog as a rookie:

There was a not tiny number of Bills fans who believed that their team had drafted a bust after his rookie season.

Yeah, and while Trey isn't going to be a sitting duck like Carr, he's still being exposed to a lot of hits on our designed running plays. The halftime show analysts noted it, as did Jimmie Ward. We don't want to see Trey taking his hits so early in his career.

There was a play where he could've easily just ran out of bounds, but opted to turn in and took a hit. He's still learning the balance of knowing when to put his body on the line vs protecting yourself.

He's definitely going to have to do a better job of protecting himself. Run out of bounds instead of taking the hit, start sliding instead of going for those extra couple of yards and getting rocked. But for his first game its tough to criticize all the little things he could/should have done.

This. Some we're expecting the next Steve young after one game of football I guess.

I'm surprised he didn't get in on that play. Had a lot of options. Laid out simmons. that's good. But carrying the ball in the wrong hand, didnt go over, didnt pull up and loft one to mitchell. Will do better next time.

I think stretching to the pylon would've been his best bet. Trying to manipulate the defender covering Elijah Mitchell for a pass is doable, but I think it's tricky.

Obviously I wish he scored, but I'm glad he didn't get hurt because that was a big collision. I'm hopeful he learns from that though. He can't run over defenders like he could in college. I think he'll be better for that in the long run.

To be fair every piece of data said he should be a bust. Its a one in a million he somehow became a pro bowl QB. I wouldn't use that to prove Lance is going to work out.

Trey had an easy TD here to Mitchell. These are the type of plays where he needs to use his mobility to stress the defense with his legs but beat them with his arm. I can't count how many times Patrick Mahomes or Russell Wilson on these time of plays press the line of scrimmage to suck in the defenders, take a step or two back to buy an extra second and lob a pass over them for an easy TD.

It was fourth down.. so I don't blame him for not chancing a random dropped pass.

I do blame him for not diving for the pylon, instead of going head first into defenders. 😐

Especially considering their talent levels as rookies aren't equal. Only the idea of the two of them, mostly fan narratives, are similar.

Josh Allen was bigger, had better throwing talent by a wide margin, and played in a much more difficult college situation. Also, his pro team wasn't nearly as good to start either.

This play to me was Lance thinking he can do what he did in college in the NFL. He ran over people a lot in the college and this would normally be a gimmie. Hopefully he learns that it wont work anymore.

He'll learn that when people are going low, dive over the pile. He's raw for sure. Real raw. He needs more time with the ones. hope he gets it NOW. Not next year.

Allen's not the only one to have struggled as a rookie before coming on in later years. Historically its far more the norm than a guy like Herbert coming in, gunning and putting up big numbers as a rookie.

They have a similar-ish background coming from a small school. I'd say it's a reasonable comparison, and the things that people say about his ability to learn makes you hopeful…

We'll see. My impression of him today is that the offense is productive under him, but the finer points of quarterbacking will take some time.

I also think a seasoned RB will box out #9 there.

I haven't seem much of his college highlights but that play tells me he won that type of play 10/10.
Nice welcome to the NFL moment for him
