That secondary has Dante Jackson (1st rounder), CJ Henderson (1st rounder), Jaycee Horn (1st rounder) and now Gilmore (1st rounder). Once they are healthy I can't wait to tune in and watch CJ standing on the sideline watching.
I mean it was fun to think about. But didn't make much sense in the end. The health issues, age, longterm contract, and lack of cap space made the probability of this zero.

people still gonna get mad though.
The track record of giving big money to CBs over 30 is not good.
Should've gotten Casey Heyward like I had been saying all off-season. He was available for months.

Different cap situations entirely.

We can restructure and cut dead weight. Cap is going up over the next few years. Lack of cap room is an excuse that can be worked. The issue is that this team would rather start soon to be 34 year old Josh Norman and a udfa while having D.Johnson as a backup then actually upgrade the position.

This article makes everything...

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/32348731/new-england-patriots-trade-cb-stephon-gilmore-carolina-panthers

"The Patriots initially were planning to release Gilmore on Wednesday, a source told ESPN's Adam Schefter, but ultimately traded the four-time Pro Bowler to Carolina for a 2023 sixth-round draft pick."

"The 31-year-old player has a base salary of $7 million in 2021 after signing a five-year, $65 million contract with the Patriots in 2017 and being advanced $5 million of his 2021 earnings in the 2020 season. The Panthers are set to pay Gilmore $5.8 million over the rest of the season.

Gilmore and the Panthers are both open to him playing out the final year of his contract, sources told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The sides could discuss an extension, but the Panthers expect Gilmore to reach free agency, which the cornerback would embrace."

f**k you John Lynch...

Never said I'm in love with our CB situation. Should have grabbed Hayward late in the offseason. But none the less, Gilmore would have been fine for a 1 year rental for a 6th, but he wants a new contract and I think it would be foolish to offer that to an injury prone 31 year old player.
To everybody in this thread saying "why couldn't we give up a 5th???"

I'm disappointed too. But this was about Gilmore's contract. Not draft picks. I guarantee 30 other teams would have been willing to give up a 6th, too.

Agreed. Soon as he gets hurt the same ppl will be complaining that we signed an aging vet with injury history
This says to me that they know that this year is over. Playing in this division, with these injuries your raising the white flag.
Boooooooo. Clearly the 49ers have given up on this year.

For $5.8 Million this season I'll take that chance instead of seeing D.Johnson out there again.
You guys realize he went to Carolina and is from Carolina, right? He probably didn't even want to come here.
