Trumaine Johnson and Aaron Donald remain unsigned. Woods and Austin were overpaid and they gave up a boatload of picks for Goff.

Les Snead night not even be the GM of that football team come January. A new GM might not be willing to pay Watkins if he doesn't stay healthy and perform.

You're right. That's the only thing that could make Watkins a free agent next year. Though, I suspect they will try to get a long term deal done right now before the season even starts.

Watkins might not want to sign anything long term?

Sammy Watkins is a "#1 WR" simply because somebody has to be listed as the top WR on the depth chart. That does not make him a "#1 WR" in terms of consistency and productivity. He has never been a #1.

Rams just gave away a top 10 2nd round pick and MUST either franchise Watkins or sign him to a mega deal.

After overpaying Robert Woods and Tavon Austin. I wouldn't count on it.

They better worry about signing Aaron Donald long term before they overpay another WR.

I wouldn't say it's definite he'll be given the Franchise Tag or a LTD. A lot can change between now and March.

With his injury history? If the dollars are right he absolutely will. Everybody has a price.

I hope they do...and I hope Donald takes offense to that and takes his talents out of this division

The GM change is really the only realistic thing that could keep him from free agency.

I think the Rams will try to get him signed to a new deal in the next few weeks. If not (and Snead is back) he'll be locked up by the Rams for 2018 one way or another.

For reference: I'm not saying it's good business for the Rams to lock up Watkins. I'm saying it's extremely likely they made this deal knowing they will lock him up one way or another.

The Rams aren't competing this year. They know that. So getting a one-year rental for a top 10 2nd round pick makes zero sense. That type of trade compensation means they want Watkins long term.

Tell that to Cousins. Some Orgs you don't want to be with

Unless Watkins is from SoCal ?
Wow, I can't believe the Bills traded Ronald Darby. I would have been willing to give something up for him.

Yup. Obviously Rams are still watching Clemson game film.

Isn't Watkins eligible to have the 5th year team option picked up since he's a 1st rounder?

He was. But the deadline has passed.
Trading Darby for Matthews and a 3rd is like the Champ Bailey for Clinton Portis trade. You don't trade a Cornerback who is good for a offensive player unless it's a special offensive player like Gronk or AJ Green.
