Who should be Baalke's replacement, if he finally gets fired?

IMO Jed should occasionally bring in outside advisers (if he doesn't already). It sounds like they may have reached out to 49ers greats before hiring Chip. But, it may help to have an outside hand to observe. It can help feed his opinion and focus on the questions he should ask his GM.

I know you laugh but I'll help put the arguments out there to keep him... even the failings have trumped any success. Here are they are to get them out of the way: his picks and signings got injured so you can't see the final product; he accumulates a lot of draft picks; he has respect in league circles.

People bringing up names like Decosta, Wolf and others need to stop smoking the funny stuff. None of those guys are coming to work under Jed York. Some of them have been turning down GM interviews for years. They are happy where they are at and know the GM job will be theirs sooner rather than later. Paton has turned down several GM interviews in the past two years. Reportedly his family is happy in Minnesota and he would only leave for the ideal opportunity.


Holmgren was an awful GM that would be a downgrade from what the 49ers have now.



If Trent Baalke is fired, Tom Gamble is the new GM, forget about the fantasyland stuff. Gamble has a strong relationship with Kelly and a good relationship with ownership and has had several GM interviews in recent years.


Considering that any GM would have to work under Jed and Al Guido, Tom Gamble is probably about as good as it gets.

i would love to get Steve Young to play a "John Elway" role for us. Possibly team him up with Brent Jones since they are business partners.

I think Young would consider it. You can tell he doesnt like how this org is ran at all and really holds back in the interviews. He knows he would be able to do a better job

So basically nothing will really change other than removing a figurehead with another figurehead? I feel like the Baalke style is defined by stubborness, power hungry, being an extension of York to get that power and a history of ignoring positions of weakness and drafting injured players. Has Gamble showed that he has the ability to rebuild the image of the Niners and fix the damage Baalke has done?

BLOW IT UP! BLOW IT UP! They should've done this last year. Trade Joe Staley and any of the very few vets this team has to a respectable contender where their talents won't be wasted on this weak product. Seriously if we ever want to leave oblivion they need to go into 2005 mode and start from scratch like an expansion team....again . Forgot this hiring from in house crap too, it'll only continue this limbo of losing. probably should rid of Kelly too. I understand this dumpster fire isn't his fault, but he was a Baalke hire, and anything with his finger prints should be killed with fire.Hopefully if they find a young football find(can't imagine why anyone would work under the Yorks after what happened to Mooch and Harbaugh), build through the draft and if we're lucky we can be respectable again in 5-8 years. It sucks that die hard 49ers fans have to go through this again. But all us fans can do is hope for the best

this team wont be a contender for at least another 10 years. lol

Combine his strong, existing relationship with Kelly, his offseason promotion, the GM interest he has drawn over the past few years and Jed's proclivity for hiring the closest guy down the hall and its more or less a done deal.


It makes too much sense, regardless if people think Gamble is a great or poor GM candidate. He might be the best realistic candidate for the 49ers too.



Guys like Paton, Caserio, Wolf, Ballard, they have plenty of options, they can afford to be picky and wait their turn. No one with real viable options that isnt already in the building is going to come work for Jed.

It's interesting you bring up Steve Young and Brent Jones in possibly teaming up in the Niners' FO. Brent Jones was actually asked that straight up last year during a segment on Radnich & Krueger's show on KNBR. Jones at the time said he didn't feel he was in so tight with the Niners' ownership and pointed towards him having to pay ticket prices at a similar or same rate as any other fan (no ex-Niner discount)...something to that effect and it obviously didn't sit well with him. Jones and Young are bright guys with the obvious football background, knowledge, competitiveness, and league connections. I don't know how well they'd do in FO positions but they are smart enough to seem competent and would be a direct link back to the glory days, the WCO, etc. This is probably just a pipe dream, I know, as Gamble would probably be the pick (and the safe one at that to pair w/ Kelly). But one who puts this team above all others in sports can dream, right?
