I think the biggest problem with the pick was from Kiper, and that's because he had him ranked 67th.

I think he's the only guy in the business that had him ranked so low. He's not a perfect player, gets beat in pass protection at times, but he was the best run blocking guard in the draft. Kelly needs guards that can drive block downhill and reach the 2nd level for his run game to function.

Yup. I'll deal with Garnett's average pass blocking if he's a dominant run blocker. It was the same deal with Iupati who was awesome for us.

Lmao people b*tching about the position last season and now that they upgraded that position some fans are still b*tching about it.

It's normal in the zone! People will always find a way to b*tch about something no matter what it is. They don't call Niner fans Whiners for no reason, lol.

we picked a good player that we did not need to trade up for. That's why we're b***hing

There's no guarantee that he'll be there when the team drafts in the 2nd, there are teams that's also in need of the Guard position. Chips offense needs a pulling Guard and Garnett happens to be mauler that will run you over and a position that needs to be upgraded, they might or might not have to trade to get him but with 12 picks you do what you gotta do to get the player you need. Remember when Mathis was playing in Phi, their running game was beast and when he left they went downhill.. It's a win win imo.

shaw said he's been improving on pass protection every year so we'll see

true.. that 7th rounder might of been cut anyways.. we need more quality.. i see we have bunch of 5th and 7th rounders.. wont be surprised if we trade again to get another 4th rounder
3rd. round wish- OLB/PR, either Kameila Correa, or Kaufasi.. either wud be good.

Garnett has started in 26 consecutive over the past 2 years to finish his career. He has a massive well-proportioned frame with longer arms (33 7/8") and big hands (10 1/8). He is a physical and powerful run blocker who also showed improved balance and awareness with his overall play in 2015 including in pass protection. Took part in one of the better battles with Oregon DE Deforest Buckner throughout our film study. Garnett is the top-guard in this class and should quickly develop into a starter ideally for a power-man scheme.

Pass Protection-3-Possesses a wide and thick frame with adequate short-area quickness. Powerful upper body and flashes a heavy punch to neutralize defenders. When able to gain position and lock on he has good mirror skills. Strong anchor to handle power moves and shows ability to sink hips and anchor when initially pushed back. Most of his problems in this area stem from him lunging. Susceptible to effective push/pull or swim moves. Needs to show more patience and sit back in sets.

Run Blocking-1-Built for a power blocking scheme. Thick and massive trunk with natural inline power. Flashes explosive initial pop. When playing with leverage and in balance has the ability drive and steer defenders off the ball. Angles improved in 2015. Doesn't always play with great balance and will fall off blocks when he lunges. While he doesn't have great athleticism in space he is nimble on his feet for size and does a nice job of adjusting on the fly.

Awareness-2-More instinctive as a run blocker than in pass pro at this point. Quickly identifies targets in the run game. Also does a nice job of locating targets at the second level or open field with short-pull or off of combo block. Adequate awareness for defensive line stunts in pass pro. Much quicker identifying pressure from the second and third level in 2015.

Toughness-1-Plays with the physical demeanor. Has an edge and willing to mix it up. Works to sustain blocks and will finish when given the opportunity.

Perhaps too much is made of the fits for scheme because it says right in that analysis above that his a perfect fit for a power scheme. Not something Chip Kelly typically does.

Don't get me wrong, I love this pick for San Francisco because it addresses a need and adds another contract year to the mix. When looking at the division with Seattle, St. Louis and Arizona, the 49ers need guys like Garrett because they're going to be facing some physical teams.

iupati 8 mil a year or this dude for 8 mil for 5 years? both are run blockers
Last time we took a Stanford offensive lineman in the first was 2003. We all know how that turned out.

Let us hope this one is not yellow flag garnering as that guy.

Only thing the two have in common football-wise was they both went to Stanford.

Other than that they couldn't be any more different. Kwame was a finesse player that got drafted based on his athletic traits. Got beat up physically in the NFL, similar to Jonathan Martin.

Garnett is a pure power player. He's looking to physically manhandle the opposition and typically does so successfully. Being a smart Stanford guy is a bonus

Shaw said he got better every single year in PP. Starting next to Staley? Um, yeah, he's going to get better and better no doubt.

Absolutely. Similar to how Gore loved running behind Iupait when we drafted him.
