Ummmm lets try an offseason without a quarterback competition. I know from experience knowing who your quarterback is from the beginning and developing your timing exclusively with that person will really help in my view.

Who ever thinks that Nate Davis is ready are idiots.

These people are making their assessments based on a small sample of plays he made AGAINST PLAYERS WHO ARE NO LONGER IN NFL ROSTERS!

He may have talent, but he is far from ready. Let him sit one more year under Alex Smith and get used to the offense and then start him on his 3rd or 4th year. By then he should be ready and there will be no more excuses.

To me it wasn't who he was playing but the way he handled himself. It was the laser throws on the comebacks. But i agree, i would like him to come in ready like Phillip Rivers did. It's just hard watching the mediocre QB play of Smith.

If Davis had the game Smith did against the Lions i would have been very disappointed

really?!?

20 out of 31, 230yds 1TD and no picks

I would be stoked if Nate davis had a game like that....

That 1TD was pure luck, he should have just barreled his way in.

One point I haven't seen raised is there was a DET player that was on a B-line toward Smith had Smith continued to run. I believe that Smith would of beaten him to the pilon but he would of taken a HUGE hit, the type Goldson has been laying on folks the past couple weeks.

IMO Smith was avoiding a huge hit on that play, not trying to pad Davis's stats or make the play harder then it needed to be.

Can anyone say, AWARENESSS, he didnt even know where he was, and truthfully he was passed LOS.

You can't say that until he's given the chance! Painter Sucks!

MVP = Peyton Manning

Painter sucked on probably the best team out there. His line is the best in the league. I'm speculating, but I would think that Painter was taking scout team reps, unlike Davis. Again, Davis would absolutely do no better.

Thank you Nostradomus. Nobody knows how Davis would do out there. It's just some of us are tired of the mediocre QB play. We've seen Hill, and Smith and no one's impressed. In a meaningless game it would be interesting to see how davis would do

Off the field he is best thrower of the bunch

Quarterbacks arent pitchers

And if anyone points to his performance in pre-season all I have to say is that the lions went 4-0 during preseason in 2008... its meaningless

Yes the outcomes of preseason games are meaningless. Showing skills that our current QB lacks is not. Davis played against 3rd stringers but he also had a 3rd string offense. So is Sunday meaningless because were playing the worst team in the league?

a lot of people think so. they wont give the team any credit for a win because its against the rams. why should nate get credit if he played and won?

Davis will get more work throughout the off season and into training camp but there will not be any QB competition between him and Smith next season, the best the Davis fan club can hope for is an upgrade from 3rd QB to backup which in itself is unlikely.

Agreed. Davis will most likely be our number 3. If he's number 2 then the GM has done a piss poor job of getting the team a backup.

Unless of course, Davis is worthy of a #2 spot, then the GM has done just fine.

But there is no way to know that untill at least training camp. By that time the team will have missed out on getting a decent vet. backup.

If you're tired of seeing mediocre QB play, then why the hell would you want to put Davis out there?

The purpose of preseason games is to evaluate unknown talent....

Because some zoners got it in their heads that Nate Davis is the next great 9er QB based on his college stats (which most NFL QBs have similiar numbers and awards) plus a preseason perfermance against guys that aren't in the NFL anymore.

Probably has a lot to do with hope. Alex Smith no longer gives some niner fans any hope. They feel he has plateaued or is at least near his plateau and there isn't anything to look forward to. With Davis, even if he is mediocre now, at least there is more hope that he will improve. At least, there is more room for improvement.

And if preseason games are to evaluate unknown talent, why are all the folks down on Davis dismissing his preseason play outright?

Some 9er fans have always hated Alex Smith. As for hope, what has this team in general given us to hope for over the last 8 years? Sure we got Gore and Willis but as a team we have sucked.

As for your last point, most people dismiss his preseason stats because he played against 3rd and 4th string players who aren't in the NFL. The talent level wasn't the same in the 2nd half as in the 1st half when the starters and backups play.
