Here's what I see happening:

- Smith is the starter in '10, Davis as the 3rd string QB
- Hill gets released in the offseason
- We sign a veteran to back up Smith
- If Smith falters during the season, the vet takes over and Smith is done as a Niner
- If the vet fails to get us to the playoffs, Davis get his shot

That is pretty much the plan B I see happening. We agree on something *gasp*

of course it would just be much easier if Smith turned out to be the QB we drafted him to be

Which 2010 free agent vet will the Niners sign?

Kyle Orton (Denver will retain him)
Jason Campbell
Chad "Duck Season" Pennington
Tavaris Jackson
Kellen Clemens
Charlie Batch
Kyle Boller
David Carr
Brodie Croyle
Daunte Culpepper
Rex Grossman
Joey Harrington
Jon Kitna
Matt Moore
Chris Redman

Their a group of guys who couldn't hold starting jobs with other teams.

Why would the team cut Hill a player popular with his peers for one of those journeymen bums?

No, the most likely scenario is that the team is going to retain Hill at the #3 spot.
Nate Davis will be promoted to the #2 and bide his time until Smith get's pulled (my $ is by game 4 if he plays at the same inconsistent level as this year).

The NFL is based on merit. Players aren't tenured because of draft position and they don't get mulligans for being injured. If another player can perform better regardless of draft position and experience, then they'll take their spot.

Davis will NOT be the #2 QB. He will remain the #3QB. Either Hill stays at the #2 or gets let go and a vet QB is brought in to be the back up. The list of available veteran QB's to back up Smith is a lot larger than the short list you compiled. They could bring back Damon Huard if they wanted to. He already has experience in Raye's offense. Just an example.

The team already cut Huard because Nate Davis showed more intangibles and upside. Also you didn't say which vet the Niners would probably get and what they bring to the table.

You seem to ignore the fact that as the #3 QB, Davis wouldn't get any practice reps and would progress. The team would make him the #2 with the intent of possibly starting him in 2011.

You don't even acknowledge the fact that if Alex Smith under performs in 2010, then the #2 would be promoted. Again, that #2 would be Davis.

What support do you have for your argument that Hill would be cut, the team will sign a vet and Davis will remain the #3?

I havent' stated that if Smith underperforms then the #2 QB will be brought in??? Thats odd because I have said it at least 4 times in this thread alone. And (just for the crybaby) IMHO Davis will be the #3 QB. Do I know what vet QB will be brought in?? Do you think I have some kind of magic crystal ball that tells the future? You like to assume that Huard was released because Davis showe more upside and bla bla bla. That could be the case but sorry the coaches are the only ones that know the real reason why Huard was cut. Hell I can throw out a scenario as well and try and pass it off as fact just as you are with your statement. The reality is that there is a large group of vet QB's that can be brought in to back up Smith. It all depends on who the coaches want to go after. The support I have for releasing Hill is the fact that the coaches know that he can not move the ball down field. Teams have figured him out, all they have to do is take away the short routes and Hill is pretty much useless. If it wasn't true then Hill would have never been demoted and Smith would not be the starter right now(AND THAT IS FACT!!!!!) You don't keep a QB who can not move the ball on the team. Therefore Hill is let go and a more capable vet QB is brouht in to back up Smith. Davis remains #3 and continues to learn the offense(Davis has a learning disability and has to be tought the offense in a differet way then a QB who does not have a learning disability) Am I calling Davis stupid, no I am just simply stating FACTS. Davis has a learning disability and has to learn the offense through pictures(as stated though one of the Matt's) but hey you and the other guy are right. I am have nothing

Actually it is fact that Damon Huard was cut because of Nate Davis preseason performance.

From a Sept 1 article by Matt Barrows

The 49ers heaped praise on quarterback Nate Davis on Tuesday morning and backed it up with action in the late afternoon. The team released 12-year veteran Damon Huard, making Davis, a fifth-round draft pick out of Ball State, the No. 3 quarterback heading into the regular season. Though Huard has had a solid offseason, he has been eclipsed by Davis, who has jumped out in the last two exhibition games. "He has a calm demeanor about him," offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye said of Davis early in the day. "He has an ability to go fast and not hurry, and if a guy is open he can hit him."

The list of available QB vets is substandard therefore the coaching staff will not bring in another QB. (deductive reasoning)

While it is correct that Shaun Hill isn't a starter, it doesn't mean that the team won't retain him as an emergency starter. Considering releasing him means taking a cap hit.

If a QB is the #3, he does not get the rep to develop. Therefore Nate Davis will not be the a #3 QB. (deductive reasoning)

As for dyslexia, it isn't an impediment to success as an NFL QB or in life, period.

No but it is a learning disability. And what does Davis have to do? LEARN THE DAMN OFFENSE!!!! (logical thinking) Davis has to learn the offense before he can start taking reps therefor he remains at the #3 QB position until he has a full grasp on the offense. You can't execute a play if you don't know it.

It's a disability that affects reading not spatial conceptualization or memory. He has spent this season learning the offense through diagrams and film.

As for taking reps, last preseason he had did take snaps with the 1st and 2nd team when Alex Smith was injured during the last couple weeks.

So as it stands, he will enter next season with a grasp of the offense, reps with the 1str & 2nd team and some preseason games under his belt.

From there he'll move forward.

Nate isn't ready and let's not mess his chances up. He needs to sit all of next season and learn. Even if Smith is injured, let the backup do his job and let the kid have time to be really ready, if it is to be. It looks to have worked for the young QB in Green Bay. Don't think it will take more than half a season next year to know if Alex can get it done or not. Excuse time is over. No excuses next year. Stop the interceptions, stop the blocked passes, don't be afraid of getting out of the box and running once in a while. Alex, step up and be the leader you are supposed to be. Nate, sit back and watch and learn. Your time will come.

Um the guy already sat 1 year. If he has the innate ability to be good then he should be able to step in sometime midseason 2010. Thats's not unprecedented.

When will people learn that because it works for one person doesn't mean that it will work for all. Does Carson Palmer have a learning disability? Does he need the coaches to resort to special means to get him to learn the offense?

Just because you change the teaching method, it doesn't mean that there is a slower rate of comprehension.

when someone has a learning disability that is exactly what it does.
Why do people assume his disability will affect his qb play? Do you guys have prior knowledge on this? Did his coaches at Ball State ever mention his disability hindering his ability to learn the playbook? I know he has denied it affects his play, and it makes sense he would deny it even if it did. I'm just wondering where some guys get this s**t.

I don't think anybody is assuming his disability will effect his play. What people have said is it will affect his ability to learn the offense. No mention of how he will play in that statement.

Actually before the team draft NAte Davis, the QB coach Mike Johnson had a film session with him to see if he could pick up the offense at a normal pace. Nate Davis proved he could and the team thus drafted him.

What you don't understand is that Davis can not just be handed the playbook and expected to learn it. His learning disability hinders him from doing that. That is the reason why he needs to use pictures and other forms of visual breakdowns of the offense to learn it.
Nate Davis not being able to pick up the offense at a normal pace because of is dyslexia, is not only unsupported conjecture, but prejudice that a persons disability some how makes a person inadequate.

Dyslexia never hindered his ability to learn the playbill in college or outperform his fellow QBs in preseason.

I'd appreciate it of you presented a credible argument supported by fact or some type of precedent.
