Only one thing wrong with your statement. Most of the time Smith doesn't even have a pocket. The OLine just gets blown up by the defense.

Or when he does have time theres no seperation, or the receiver drops the perfectly thrown ball, or raye called a bad play, or there was pass interference, or the ball wasnt properly inflated, smith had a hangnail, ate a bad burrito, the man was trying to hold him down, marc roman

I'm very disappointed in my fellow 49er fans. I have come to the conclusion that most niner fans know nothing about football and just want to take about the qb play. Alex Smith has done a heck of a job this season on this horrible assembled team and one of the worst coaching staffs in football. But you guys wanna hype up Nate Davis but put down your #1 overall pick down. DISGRACEFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He would have done better if it weren't for his O-line

Must be that funky new math, but that looks like a hell of a lot more than just six plays. I thought he only knew six plays??!!

Anyone who watches that video has to admit he has definitely got some skills. I saw some amazing throws that i would never ever ever see Smith be able to make. With that said, i agree we should let him sit, but i think he's the QB of the future.

Just from watching this video i noticed a couple things he has that alex smith doesn't...
Quick release, Accuracy, Pocket Awareness, Can buy time

Totally agree. The one thing that Alex doesn't do well is make plays when the pocket breaks down. Not saying Alex has to run around like McNabb or Vick, but he's missing that ability to slide around or step up in the pocket when things start to fall apart...buying a half-second by moving around to allow a guy to break free is where a lot of plays are made in the NFL.

He hasn't shown this skill at all, whereas Davis does it naturally.

Davis does it naturally against 3rd string defenders.

that play where he hits Walker after that LB who is completely unblocked comes right at him and he is able to avoid the rush and make the completion is soooo MONEY. i would like to think that if Davis plays balls out in the pre season next year it would put pressure on the brain trust, but they will just say he was playing against 2nd stringers, etc. and downplay it.

Not sure why that even matters, firstly because he hasn't had the opportunity to do it against anyone else. But more importantly, if you do this naturally against 3rd stringers, you'll do it against 1st stringers (your mind and muscle reflexes don't distinguish between 1st, 2nd or 3rd stringers...you just instinctively do what you do as an athlete). Now, this doesn't mean he'll always be successful doing it, but that skill has to be there in the first place regardless of the competition you're facing.

He'll have to make his reads quicker and he'll have smaller windows to throw in against professional 1st stringers, but the concept is the same, and that's natural when making the jump from college to the NFL.

Bottom line, I'm not annointing Davis in any way...just pointing out that this kid has a much more natural feel for playing QB than does Alex. Doesn't mean he'll be any better since that is to be determined...but there are obvious differences to the naked eye, regardless of the level of competition.

donovan mcnabb wants to work out with him in the offseason
Someone please dig up pre-season starts for the 3rd string QBs and compare to Nate. I bet they are comparable. I guess they should all start right? I'm sure Curtis Painter (noez I'm not sayeeng teh Alecks iz teh Paytonz) did fabulous in pre-season. I'm sure Brennan did awesome too, and Sorgi, and Redman, etc etc. Whats the point?

He hasn't had the opportunity to do it against anybody else because he isn't ready. And this is what I have been saying the entire time. I have not once said he will not be a good QB or anything close to that. All I have said is let him sit and learn.

Teeoh if that happened that would be great for him

We're saying the same thing, just differently. I agree that he's not ready...if he was, he'd have the opportunity to show it. However, when he did get his chance, he showed some very natural QB skills...skills that not even Alex has showed. Can he do that against NFL starters? We don't know and won't until he gets a chance.

when will he get his chance?? That all depends on how Smith performs in 2010. I honestly don't believe that Davis will be the #2 QB next year. If I am wrong about that then so be it. But I do believe that the 49ers either cut Hill and bring in a vet QB to back up Smith or keep Hill and he backs up Smith again. If Smith continues to improve next season and makes a big enough impression that they keep him as the starter for 2011 then we are in good shape. If he fails then let Smith finish the season and allow Davis to compete for the starting job in 2011.
^^

Here's what I see happening:

- Smith is the starter in '10, Davis as the 3rd string QB
- Hill gets released in the offseason
- We sign a veteran to back up Smith
- If Smith falters during the season, the vet takes over and Smith is done as a Niner
- If the vet fails to get us to the playoffs, Davis get his shot

That is pretty much the plan B I see happening. We agree on something *gasp*
