It's amazing how one move could have made these forums turn to such a positive attitude. It is like nothing else matters now that AS is the starter. Here is to hoping Urban Meyer is correct in his judgement that Alex can be a "dynamite player"

So now the question is why was he so fluent in his play on Sunday? Was it because he knows how the NFL is? Because he now knows a new system for 2009? Is Rayes system very similar to his successful season in 07? I personally think it is because he is older and more mature plus he knows the speed on the NFL now. JMO.
This.
Yo SD do you like Alex?
I don't think he ever had a fair shot.
~ Healthy 2 years.
~ Injured for the season 2 years.
~ Thrown under the bus by his previous coach.
~ Thrown into the lineup too soon when he was not ready.
~ 4 offensive coordinators in 4 years.
~ Different offensive system every year.
~ Always had a bad O LINE and still does.
I think he has talent and ability. They need to get a consistent offensive coordinator and system. Also we need a much better O LINE and stability there.
Also spread out the field like plays into the strenghts of Alex Smith. Why would you want to design a system to play to his weaknesses? That's what we continually did under NoWIN. I worry about that under SING too. Play to your players strenghts! Not every player or every team has the same strengths. Figure out what they are and play to that for your team.

And the good thing is, it only takes like 20 minutes to learn all of Jimmy Raye's playbook!
Alex is ready to play. He has worked hard and is ready. Sing, Raye please donot be stubborn and put him in alot of 3rd and long situations, cause you want to run the ball for 2 yds

~ Don't throw him to the wolves before he is ready.
And what did we do?
Not really our front offices fault though. McCarthy and Turner got promoted, and Hostler was in over his head. After Hostler's season the front office pretty much gave up on Alex.

I agree with all ya points. I could never understand why Nolan wouldnt use a spread O like Smith had in college. Its not like its easy to stop look at Indi

Why are you sick of it? It sums up what we have seen. And if we had listened to him we would have been so much better off.

I bet Old Raye was taking a little nap at halftime, till he heard Singletary scream out "I want winners and Shawn were losing sooo.... Alex I want winners... Who stole my lucky boxers?!?" The Samurai then put an old cassette in the boom box and they all sat there quietly listening to the 85' Bears Super Bowl song. Raye then threw his old high school playbook in the trash , while reaching into a old worn out briefcase. He gently pulled out a thick notebook with red letters on the front spelling out PHOENIX.

Here is another interesting thought... he said that Alex wont try to make something out of nothing. He wont try to force a pass if the receiver isn't open. Perhaps the reason why he simply threw the ball away so many times early on was because we had s**tty receivers that couldn't get open. Perhaps now with Crabtree, Morgan, and VD he will be more decisive because receivers are getting open more.

Ok, it wasn't the OC's leaving every year that caused problems, it was the fact that Nolan couldn't pick an offensive scheme (or didn't care to).
McCarthy runs the West Coast Offense
Turner runs a Coryell offense.
Hostler ran a WTF offense (becuase that's the look it would put on your face)
Martz's offense is Coryell based, but he doesn't care about the TE or RB.
Had Nolan picked an offensive scheme and based his OC picks around that, the problem would have been negated. Instead, by making the picks he did, he was basically rebooting the offense every season. New schemes, new terminology, new setup.

To be fair, our OCs moved on for various reasons, here's a few:
McCarthy - Promotion to HC of Packers
Turner - Promotion to HC of Chargers
Hostler - Fired, but not all his fault, we lacked talent plus Smith injured most of season.
Martz - Smith on IR all season.
Raye - Smith finally healthy and looks like he benefits from sitting part of the year. He impressed me the way Nate Davis impressed me in pre-season, moving in the pocket and throwing downfield.

Of course.
