As I mentioned in the other thread, the comparison to Torrey Smith is a bit uncanny. Both were quality vertical threats with iffy hands coming out of college.

Smith-6'1", 204, 4.43 40 time, 41" vertical, 10'6" broad jump.

Nothing iffy about Coates' hands, though. Those things are frying pans for sure.

worst thing he has one of the bigger hands in the draft idk whats worse your analogy or Coates
Him here trying to catch some of those Kapernick lasers? Oof. If he is drafted here hopefully he will take up Jerry Rice's offer to workout unlike Jenkins. Jerry can relate about the hands as he was a drop machine his rookie year. Then, with hard work, determination and adhesive spray (j/k), boom. Greatest WR Ever.

Coates didn't do much to improve his draft stock today...he's got some physical tools, but as Mayock and Irvin pointed out, he's just not a natural pass catcher. I'd take Strong over him, if Baalke wants to get a big WR.

Same here. Easily. Strong should be a first-round pick.
Despite Coates having all the great workout numbers, I just don't see him as a great receiver in the NFL. With the physical tools he has, he should be a much better player, a dominant one even. But I don't see those physical traits translating into something special at the NFL level either.

Yes this is an interesting comparison.

Would you say that Coates tracks the deep ball in the air as well as Torrey Smith?

No.

I would say Coates is very inconsistent tracking the deep ball. Prototypical boom or bust prospect.

Note: Coates 19.1 percent drop rate is also from 2014 (per his NFL Draft scouting report). His career drop rate is 12.8 percent (per PFF).

College Football Focus (PFF) did not include Coates on their Bottom 10 Drop Rate List 2014

That's what I was thinking. I respect your opinion, and I thought your previous post was leaning toward them being similarly equipped to be deep threats. Thanks for clarifying.
Watching the Auburn Pro day on SEC Network. It'll be interesting if he can do anything to improve his Combine performance. The highlights they've shown so far make him look pretty good, but waiting to see how he performs the catching drills where he is familiar with the QB.

Don't know how far he's going to fall on draft day, but if things go poorly for the 49ers in the first round (receiver-wise - if the top 4 are already gone and they take BPA), maybe Coates in round 2?

Patriots worked out Sammie Coates very hard. Hell of a smoke screen if they're not interested. Dude is huge.
