Satisfied with their situation at safety, 49ers are not interested in UFA O.J. Atogwe, source tells CSN. http://bit.ly/ahWUAq

If Mays/Goldson is the future, then I'd say we cut ties with Michael Lewis right now - especially if he's realistically going to stay on the roster for one more season.

Sign Atogwe, release Lewis.

FS: Atogwe/Smith
SS: Goldson/Mays

So you'd rather cut Lewis, switch Dashon Goldson to strong saftey, sign OJ Atogwe and then let Goldson walk next season?

You'd let Goldson (25 Years Old) go for Atogwe (28 Years Old) and then hope Mays is ready to step in next season (which he may not be)? All the while considering you'd have to pay Atogwe 15+ Million guaranteed (see Antrel Rolle). Don't forget Atogwe is coming off shoulder surgery.

Quoted from my post in the Rams Notebook: Is Atogwe headed to San Francisco 49ers?:

We've had this discussion before.

Player 1 - 74 Tackles, 5 PD, 1 SK, 3 FF, 2 INT
Player 2 - 94 Tackles, 6 PD, 2 SK, 3 FF, 4 INT

Player 1 is 28 and coming off shoulder surgery.
Player 2 is 25 and played in every game last season.

Which would you want locked up long term?
Would b nice to let Taylor sit till he deserves it not play him cuz were desperate. Oj fits the 9er mold and would turn last years ? position to this years !! almost defently . Plus it would alow for serious competition for next years contract. Plus you dont know how good this guy can be seing that he is on the unflattering RAMS and still looks great. ( he could be a Ronnie in Rams clothing for all we know

I saw your post and I think comparing one year's stat instead of comparing consistency and talent over the entire career is not fair. It's cherry picking stats instead of analyzing the situation fairly.

Atogwe has been praised for his consistency and talent for 3+ years now. He has a knack for making big plays, and he has proven to be somewhat of a ballhawk. This is the first main injury for Atogwe since his rookie year.

I don't understand the love for Goldson at this point. He played only .5 seasons at a high level. He struggled severely in the first 8 games of last season. And while Goldson remained healthy for 2009, he had injury problems in 2007 and 2008.

I am not saying to replace Goldson by any means. I think converting him to SS and putting Atogwe (more reliable FS) at his old spot will improve coverage and interception areas for our secondary.

Let Goldson show that 2009 wasn't just a one year wonder. If he shows consistency and elevates his game to another level, then we will have two good safeties. If he doesn't, then we have a nice raw prospect in Taylor Mays.
LET'S f**kING DO IT! We need the depth, our starting (and secondary) safeties never play 16-straight games on a seasonal basis due to injury and inconsistency.

Boosting our backfield should still be a high priority, I still don't trust Michael Lewis' health, and Mays could be too green to take over the moment Lewis takes a s**t on the field again.

I disagree with your assessment of Goldson, as well as your praise of Atogwe (as does Trent Baalke and Mike Singletary, evidently).

Paying top dollar for a player coming major shoulder reconstruction, as well lingering sports hernia issues doesn't seem logical.

You will indeed be replacing Atogwe with Goldson, because the team can't possibly retain Atogwe, Goldson (in 2011) and Mays. Have that much money tied into your safeties doesn't seem economically sound.

Dashon Goldson started and played in all 16 games in 2009. Prior to 2009, Mark Roman started 32 consecutive games spanning two seasons.

Michael Lewis started and played in 15 games in 2009. During his three seasons in San Francisco, he's missed just one game due to a concussion.

Injuries? WUT?

Several teams that were reportedly interested in pursuing free-agent FS Oshiomogho Atogwe (Rams) – the Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers and Minnesota Vikings – claim they will not pursue him, according to Howard Balzer, of the St. Louis Globe-Democrat. The Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions have been other teams mentioned, and no one from either team has yet to comment on their alleged interest.

id just offer him less money then, still would provide depth/ starter material at a lower price
It's interesting that he still isn't signed.
