Why is it that every time someone advocates picking up players in FA some guy has to come out of the woodwork and bring up the REDSKINS? Its a strawman argument. The Redskins are trying to buy a Championship? We on the other hand are advocating a balance. Why is everything here so either or?
I also keep reading how in FA you over pay? My question is, what does that mean exactly? In my opinion, FA isn't just about the individual player per say, but the over all value that is brought to a team (i.e. can the addition of that one player help take a team from 8 wins to 10 or 11) That can't always be measured in tackles and interceptions. In fact, look at it this way. What if a team was very solid, but they had one cornerback that was just horrible? So horrible that he often was getting burned. If you can significantly upgrade that position even if you have to over pay some would it be worth it? I think so. Solidifying an important position can be the diffrence between 7-9 or the playoffs. Obviously you can't do this at every position every year (i.e Redskins) or you would destroy your team, but if the startegy is implemented at the right time and in the right amounts that can be the diffrence maker.
Also, there is nothing wrong with over paying once in a while if you have the cap space to do it.
It's just my 2 cents.

We could get McNabb for a 2nd rounder and would not have to give him a tone of money to keep him (by the way Alex makes good money). This would also be the best thing for Nate Davis he can sit 2 or 3 yrs and learn from a real QB kinda like what happened in Green Bay. With McNabb we go from playoff hopefuls to SB contenders
The verbage isnt what makes the WCO hard. Its the precision of the offense that makes it hard. Its a precision offense and that takes time to build. Routes, Qb drops, blocking, It all needs to be executed to perfection. Its all timing and its not something that happens in a few months. It doesnt matter, He is going to Oakland anyways.

BS, if you didn't think Brees was a stud then your a fool.
Brees had 24 tds and 15 ints his last year in SD. Why do you think SD drafted a QB with such a high draft pick? Its not because he was a stud. Do you even know your history and watch the games?
The real question is DO YOU know your history? Brees kept Rivers on the bench, SD drafted Rivers long before Brees was let go.

We have a really good defense, a future stud WR in crabs. A really good running back. Were just a QB away.
Minnesota anybody????
Wrong, we're not a QB away. We need lots of help on the offensive line, more consistent pass rush, a bit more depth in the secondary, and a lot of help in the return game. We could also use a change of pace RB.
How many picks do we have anyway? I sure hope we have the worlds best scouting department because we are going to have to hit on every pick we have to fill all of our holes.

Ok so if the QB call a play doesn't that tell everybody what to do. I understand about timing and all that, but if you can't speak the language you have no ideal when and where to be. That really doesn't matter though the 49ers have a chance to improve the team and it won't cost alot of money or our future. Know I really hope I'm wrong but next season (if there is one) everybody will be mad because we passed on a very good QB and now have to draft one out of panic because Alex is Alex Carr is Carr and Nates not ready.

Why the Oh Lord look? My point is we can't do everything through the draft. I dont think we need big name FAs, but there a few solid guys out there that wont break the bank over the long wrong and could really help this team.

I'm not saying Break the Bank, or send all of our draft picks. I'd be satisfied if Jed or Mike said "We tried but what they wanted was ridiculous."
Why would we spend abunch of money onf FREE AGENTS when we needs to Resign key player coming up like 1. Patrick Willis 2. Vernon Davis 3. Dashon Goldson just 2 name afew

MM Don't give us this we owe it to Alex to start him, last I say we paid him millions to sit on the bench. I just don't get this F.O.
This isn't the first time either (Randy Moss, Braylon Edwards, Pick for Sanchez, Brett Favre)
Not adding to the McNabb talk, just using this as an example.
OK i understand where your comming from ...but you gotta look at the big picture...in order for our QB to function the right way we need a better OL, im not sayin that alex is a franchise QB but we havent really seen what he can do behind a better line... as for mcnabb i dont think the eagles are stupid enough to trade him to the cardinas who plays in the NFC .. and for the other big names your talkin about not worth the millions...for example the bears gave 90 mil to peppers ..with that money we can sign better players in the market who can help us and wont cost as much or use the money to sign our own players ..( willis...davis..).and other players in our team thats looking for a better contract.

i wish its as simple as you make it sound ...even with Mcnabb its not a guaranteed playoffs...yes he's a great QB but that guy is fragile...if he gets hit hard ..there's a chance you can lose him for the season ...and with that..there goes our money..our pick ...and back to Alex...and then what?

I really think we need a legit backup RB. There are/were a number of guys like T.Jones, K.Jones, Fargas, Willy Parker that could really be an insurance policy. Wasn't Jones and Lt basically signed for 2 to 2.5 million a year for two years? Why not?
I also like the idea of picking up a guy like Owens. He is a little more expensive, but I think the impact he could have on this team is huge and its not like we have a solid number 2 (IMO). Plus, I doubt he expects a long term contract.

I don't think anyone says don't utilize FA, but there's a time, a place, and a limit. I do believe that the draft is where you really build your team, as barring the very rare FA steal, it is really the only way you can get and develop longterm contributers for a better than market price.
We actually have made FA moves recently, and for the most part, they've been pretty good moves, but people are upset that we overpaid for Clements (often not understanding his contract), or upset that we overpaid for B. Jones (maybe, but he did look nice until his injury).
At the same, time people seem to forget that we traded Rashaun Woods for Walt Harris, two underperformers, but we ended up with a pro-bowler and they ended up with nothing. We brought on Justin Smith, a pro-bowler who has been awesome for us. We brought on Takeo Spikes who has been nice for us as well. Abrayou Franklin, Isaac Bruce, Larry Allen, among others, have also been instrumental.
But you also have the likes of Dontarrious Thomas, Jonas Jennings, Deshaun Foster, Tully-Banta-Cain (who wasn't so bad and is a quality player that didn't fit), and others, who don't catch on. That's a pretty good list as far as recent failed FA acquisitions go...which might be part of the problem here where it can appear that if you sign FA's, they do well. In that regard, most will agree that we've done well in FA. But if you look at other teams who did sign the big names, it's not nearly the same story. Every year players flow from team to team, and the success rate is not high. We've made some moves, less than some others, but they need to be the right moves if you want constant improvement. Desperation rarely provides for a wise decision.
I'm not saying the F.O. has been perfect, but free agency is a complicated animal and what seems like an no-brainer is often I horrible waste of not only money, but time. Some FA moves we have, or haven't, made may have been the wrong ones, but by simply upping the ante to just make more moves, we we invariably get some more good players (at a high price), but will get loads of players who don't catch on, and every time we do so we use up more money and, more importantly as fans, more time, rather than draft someone who suits us well and can be developed, form a dedication to our team, and play for us for longer and less.
