Sort of. The league owns the Hornets. Here is the league's (funny) statement on this just a few minutes ago.

"It's not true that the owners killed the deal, the deal was never discussed at the Board of Governors meeting and the league office declined to make the trade for basketball reasons."

I'm fairly certain this is unprecedented. The Hornets have run their basketball operations autonomously during the league's reign as "owner", and in reality, they serve as a placeholder until new ownership is found. Being that they serve the interests of all franchises, should the league be able to kill a trade that's agreed upon between 3 teams for "basketball reasons"?

Hell no. If that team loses money who foots the bill? If that would be the owners then they damn well better have a voice.
s**ts cold blooded and I'm a warriors fan! I hate stern!

Sure. But you'd have to justify that the "basketball reasons" that led to them vetoing the deal were in the best interest of the Hornets and not their own teams, and therein lies the conflict of interest.

You had a very similar situation transpire last year with Carmelo Anthony, and New Orleans would yield considerably more basketball talent than the Nuggets did if this trade were to go through. It's also the first transaction where they have exercised any control whatsoever regarding player transactions, including the Jarrett Jack trade that upset several owners, yet still went through.

It's obviously unchartered territory, but there is a clear conflict of interest here.
Chris Paul will explore legal options along with union chief Billy Hunter after the NBA inexplicably stopped Thursday's big trade, and there are rumors that he will not show up in Hornets camp.

Right now league spokesman Tim Frank has said the owners had nothing to do with the decision, saying the league office made a "basketball decision." Reports are already emerging indicating Frank is blatantly lying, but again, nobody believe him in the first place. We'll be reversing all of today's trade action as soon as we feel the story has gained traction, and we're sure the rest of the league is on pause, too.

LOL. Paul with the hurt butt.

Id be pissed also. There was a trade in place and the owners dictated what can and cannot happen. If I were Los Angeles or Houston I would fire off a lawsuit against the league.
Somebody has to wait for someone to buy the Hornets, otherwise no deals with CP3 are done
that's lame, the hornets made a good deal
bahahahhaha!!!
Wow!!! CP3 for Gasol and Odom?? Sounds a little much, but we weren't gonna get any, if we didnt give any. Still Wow!

And then this happens.
WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

basketball reasons... (facepalm)
As a Laker fan I'm glad this trade didn't go through. No way you give you 2 big men who are all-stars for a small...You need BIGS to win Championships: Spurs, Celtics, Lakers, Mavs, Heat (w/Shaq)...
Non-championship
I'm told there is a school of thought in informed circles that Stern vetoed C.Paul trade because a D.Howard-to-LA trade was coming up next.

"Lakers were not even told by NBA how they could change the trade to make it palatable for the league office." the NBA is so full of s**t, no doubt the owners cried to stern and forced him to veto the trade. theyre gonna get their ass sued
