In BUF case, Fitzpatrick was the guy they were grooming and hitching their wagon to. Alex Smith isn't that guy for us.
How do you know that we aren't hitching our wagon to Smith? I think we are, regardless of the second round burned last year. That is why I advocated bypassing a QB in the early rounds. Now, we will have used a high draftee that rides pine for the next four to five years.
I don't know, signing a QB to a 1-year deal wasn't exactly hitching our wagons to him.

You know why he has a realistic shot? Because Alex Smith was benched in favor of Shaun Hill.
Who?
Exactly
The potential for a second year guy to outplay him is very real. If he does so be it. If not ..... LETS GO DEEEEEFENSE

before this year, Alex hadn't really won a true competition....first time was this past season versus Colin. He lost to Rattay his first year, even though he was getting more reps in OTA's than Tim. He lost to Shaun.....He wasn't in an open competition in those other situations I believe.
Sing said it himself.....they got rid of Shaun Hill (solid backup who could start) for a 7th round pick, and brought in David Carr.."So Alex didn't have to look over his shoulder".

Thats why this whole competition earned job whatever crap is a joke. Harbaugh already has his mind made up. He likes Alex so doesn't matter if Kaep outplays him. Alex is the starter day 1. It's like the person at work, does an ok job but gets ridiculous raises because upper management likes him.
I dont know what CK can do. Nobody does so I'm not saying he will take his job. I'm just saying I dont believe there is a real competition like stated in the past.

I think as much as Harbaugh might believe in Colin, if it had to come down to it. I think he is taking next season into consideration, and believes what would be best for this team is if Alex comes back. We are going to play some of the toughest opponets in one season, we have had in a long time. Alot of tough away games. So with Alex, at least in his mind, Alex won't lose the game....and in fact might improve next season. So Harbaugh is going to say EVERYTHING he can in every opportunity to get Alex back....even though Jim is saying all this stuff, doesn't mean that even Jim would throw the bank at Alex. But he is just letting him and everyone know that Alex is his guy. (the Media is trying to pressure him about Manning)
Jim is going to have Alex's back till the very end....and if his comments also helps Alex get a starting job on another team, IF the 9ers chooses to go in a different direction, then in Jims mind he was able to help his player one last time.
You shouldn't have to worry about Colin getting a fair shot too much. If he clearly out plays Alex, then the media (who hates Jim) will pressure him about his own words in the past. That on top of other players on the team he would not want to lose credibility with.....as well as just being true to himself.
So if Colin straight up out plays Alex, then Colin would get the job.....if Alex plays conservative, and Colin does the same.....Alex will keep the job. Alex will most likely keep the starting role, because I don't see Alex playing "horrible enough" in the short stint that is preseason. And of course, Alex pretty well come out playing amazing. You never know with Alex. (which is one reason I have been ready to move on from him for a while now)

if youre talking about the 2008 season then no he lost because he needed another surgury on his throwing shoulder
martz comfirmed this he said alex wasnt himself didnt look like he could throw far like in gametape and was in pain when he was throwing
the shoulder surgury was botched there were wires grinding against his shoulder bones every time he threw

Yes. This has been said for so long that it's simply impossible for the regulars here not to know it.
So, I guess it's being "overlooked" for convenience of how deceptively "bad" it makes Alex look. Illusion-fail.

Yeah I already know Alex is definitely the starter. CK is such an unknown. Alex showed spurts in the past and this season, but I don't think you will ever get consistency. Do you think they cut Tolzien and go for Josh Johnson as a backup?

no....tolzien is cheaper, and i believe drafting kaep who has similar to better skills then josh will prevent that from happening. also about tolzien, as much as i believe in kaep being successful...colin better not f'around....scott seems like a qb who would not let that starting job go if he ever gets it. he can play conservative, but at the same time seems like a qb who will be able to move the chains with his arms.....find the open guy and hit him accurately in stride for big plays.......and although some still feel we don't have much weapons on offense, i still disagree.....i think we can be a explosive offense with even the current group. if tolzien gets the starting role, he will be hard to unseat. colin's upside makes up for an offense that needs it..more so than most qbs in this league.....but imo our offense is good enough along with our whole team that if we needed tolzien to come in, he would do fine. sorry for the wall of text my ever since the new format layout here at the zone...smartphone's browzer doesn't work too well.

I'd advocate Harbaugh acquires Josh Johnson...he can be had for not a lot and would give Harbaugh a QB with some experience. JJ's a pretty good playmaker, too. Coach was lucky Alex stayed healthy all season...it might not have turned out so good if he'd been forced to throw Kap out there.

i dunno
that woud be a slap in the face to kaep if we get a younger qb who has ties to harbaugh

From what I have seen from Tolzien he reminds me of the "New Alex". They both are conservative. Only reason I threw Josh in is because he is a vet and knows Harbaughs system. He would be more expensive than Tolzien, but he definitely would not break the bank.
I think we need more out of the offense especially if the team does not play to re-sign Brooks and Rogers. We had tons of 3 and outs and spurted in the red zone. The D kept us in games, but it may not work next season all the time with the change of personnel.
